In addition to performing at this year’s VMAs, Karol G is nominated for three awards: Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration and Best Latin. If she wins either or both of the latter two awards, she’ll split it (or them) with Shakira for their joint track “TQG.”

In February, Karol G released her fourth studio album, Mañana Será Bonito. When GQ Mexico featured her on the cover of their print magazine six weeks later, the Colombian singer spoke out against what she felt were “disrespectful” edits to cover shot. “My face does not look like this, my body does not look like this, and I feel very happy and comfortable with how I look naturally,” she wrote in Spanish. “Beyond feeling [the edits are] disrespectful to me, [they are disrespectful] to the women who wake up every day desperately looking to feel comfortable with ourselves despite society’s stereotypes.” Since then, she’s toured extensively, notably performing at Coachella and at NPR’s Tiny Desk office studio.
