Ahead of the ceremony, the pop star opened up about her mental health in a TikTok posted on Monday, September 11, saying that she feels “grateful and blessed” for the recognition and opportunity. However, Rexha stated that with stardom comes some nasty “criticism,” which she “does get to [her]” sometimes — even with fans who say they admire her “confidence.”

Adding that she’s “not feeling so confident” at the moment, the singer confessed to being extremely “anxious and stressed about going on the red carpet,” as she’s worried about “people talking about my weight.”

“Because I’m not really loving myself right now. I’m not really feeling like the bad bitch that I usually am.” Rexha said, before revealing that she may be too overwhelmed to attend the awards show, where she’s nominated for “Best Collaboration” for her song with David Guetta, “I’m Good (Blue).” She continued, “I do feel like anxiety gets the best of me."

Rexha explained that she wanted to post this TikTok, because “everybody has these days, and nobody ever feels perfect.” She did not close the door entirely on the possibility of attending the VMAs, and reached out to fans who struggle with similar issues for any tips to deal with her anxiety, saying she does “genuinely want to go."
