Thrintage: Vice Versa

March 05, 2009

Every other Thursday, FADER style contributor Bethany Cosentino crosses boroughs, counties and states to find us fine thrifted and vintage pieces on the cheap for her column, Thrintage (get it?). This week she traveled to Williamsburg, Brooklyn to check out Vice Versa on Bedford Avenue. Read her thoughts and peep the steals after the jump.

In a city like New York– where a cup of coffee can cost you five dollars– it is often hard to find a good deal. That is why I treasure the places that offer me great things, for great prices. I’ve got my cheap bagel shop, my cheap sushi spot, and most importantly, my cheap vintage spot.
Vice Versa is an epic vintage paradise, with everything from soft, thin t-shirts, to forty-dollar Frye boots (a serious deal). Located on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg, this store offers a top-notch selection of vintage goodies, for ridiculously reasonable prices. A little bit down the block, overpriced vintage stores seem to be charging close to a hundred dollars for a used fur coat—but not this place. Nothing in the store ever seems to be over fifty dollars, including vintage fur. This place caters to everyone—they sell everything from lightly used Nike running shoes, to mint condition Doc Martins—and did I mention they’re cheap?

I found the most incredible 70s ankle length sweater dress, and another floor length denim summer dress with embroided birds (if you can’t already tell, 70s floor length dresses are kind of my thing). There was also some great Southwestern print items, like a super cute poncho with pull strings, and a high, button necked sweater, as well as a great vest with wooden toggle buttons, and a bright patterned trim. While in the dressing room, I found a beautiful men’s bomber coat with a fur collar, in mint condition. And for my inner canyon dweller, I found an oversized, thick sweater-like jacket with bright stripes—perfect for these freezing cold, early March days (yes it’s still snowing in March).

Rack after rack of beautiful patterned dresses, and comfy worn-in sweaters line the store, and there is an entire wall of shoes and boots—all in great condition, and all for under thirty dollars. Another awesome thing about this place, is that it’s a family owned business and they have a few other stores around New York City—so not only are supporting a good cause, but you are getting great pieces for a steal.
