On Friday night we put on our dancing shoes and took the train uptown for the latest installment of the One Step Beyond series at The American Museum of Natural History, where DJ Mehdi and The Rapture's Mattie Safer played classic tracks for the bedecked crowd (hello, sequined tops). As we danced around the moon rocks, we noticed there were quite a few people getting dangerously close on the floor. It was like a scene from Barbarella in there. Although we can't be sure any interstellar connections were made, we might try our luck at romance at the next OSB, when Nick Catchdubs and Michna take over DJ duties on November 21st.

Special FX wizard Syndrome is back for T-Pain's next video with Chris Bridges, off Thr33 Ringz. We'd like to sugest that they put all of these videos on a 3-D DVD, so we can see a piece of T-Pain's face fly directly at us through a krumper's legs.

Although we follow Animal Collective with a tenacity usually reserved (by others) for dubious jam bands, we're still pretty consistently baffled by some of the music that ends up on their label. For example: we've been spending most of the morning trying to figure out what is going on with Dent May and His Magnificent Ukuele, a one man ukulele band who's debut album was recorded in his own home by Rusty Santos. We're not sure if this is going to start Old Timey Music Resurgence 2.0, but we are pretty sure that whoever the Wes Anderson of the future is will be using these songs to soundtrack his films.

  • Freeload: Diplo's Radiohead Remixes

    Kaleidiploscope_main
Diplo threw up two versions of his remix for the 'Head this weekend with a fair amount of explanation about unmastered leaks and re-remixes. About Version 2, he wrote:

…eventually i came up up with something else even.. i really like it too, a lil more clubworked in the end.. the originaly idea was to make the biggest drum break of all TIME! but then it got scarey.. so here is the tame kangaroo version

We were feeling pretty old after realizing the source of this sample, Soul II Soul's "Back to Life", and the movie scene that forever cemented it in our cultural memory, the Belly title sequence, are twenty and ten years old, respectively. But then we perked up knowing Maino is just now hitting his stride after what seems like ten or twenty years of trying to break—okay three or four—with a solid, and hopefully less trend-inspiring, follow-up to "Hi Hater."

  • Stylee Fridays: Velour Fall '08

    Velour1_main
Here in the style department we're often so focused on what's next—foraging stripy dresses (so very Dries, darlings) for the spring and stashing itty bitty rompers for next summer—that we completely forget about what's actually factually happening right now. Of course it's always important to take a good, hard look at what's going on with your fall/winter wardrobe just to figure out what sort of style loopholes need patching up—a good pair of boots or a coat for example. Velour is a Swedish label we came across earlier this year at Capsule, and we touched on it briefly in a review of the tradeshow. What we saw there was actually Spring '09 (stay with us), awesome classic pieces with a Scandinavian twist. Velour started out with a store selling deadstock vintage clothing, and the little classicisms in their line kind of make sense when you think back to those origins. Anyway, working backwards in the collection and forwards in our closets, Fall/Winter '08 Velour is full of amazing basics—great knits and tailored pants, all subtly updated with a modern fit and color palette. As much as we loved the spring collection, the Swedes are obviously better equipped when it comes to designing with colder climes in mind. And there are plenty of things to help us keep us cozy and stylish right now—the double-breasted Owen cardigan in oatmeal, the James shawl sweater in orange, and the London coat in grey. For the girls: the dark denim Samantha Chinos and oversized Nadia plaid shirt. Check the pics after the jump. more...

  • Video: Benoit Pioulard, "Ragged Tint"

When we last checked in with Benoit Pioulard he was hanging out in Portland, working at a restaurant, recording music and spending a lot of time on his bike. Now, just in time for the release of his new album, Temper, Pioulard has created a video for "Ragged Tint," pairing soothing vocals with speedy finger-plucked guitar. When we first heard it, we were thinking the song would be a great soundtrack to nightmares about being chased, and it turns out we weren't too far off because the video features Pioulard running really fast against the backdrop of a pretty amazing Oregon sunset. If we were him, we'd get back on the bike (it's faster, dude), but since we're not him, we're just going to go ahead and recommend that you hop on your own bikes (or run really fast) to the record store to buy Temper on Tuesday.

Like those statistics you learned in middle school about deforestation or endangered manatee, it seems like every four seconds a new venue opens up in New York City. The latest is 92YTribeca, a new arts center opening October 18th, who are throwing a pre-opening show tomorrow night with FADER 57 GEN F-ers Crystal Stilts along with Violens and Chairlift. So you can get a jump on new venue discovery, and it's free if you RSVP! Just email Bsisto@92Y.org with the subject "10.11.08 - 92YTribeca – BV" and your first and last name in the body of the email and you're set. (via Brooklyn Vegan)

  • Hood By Air At A.S.S.

    Hoodbyair_main
Last night we strolled over to Terrence Koh’s Asia Song Society gallery in Chinatown, a small but appropriate space on Canal Street where we caught Matthew Stone taking a nap a year ago. Brooklyn banjee boys and clothing designers, Shayne Oliver and Raul Lopez, presented their Gigolow and Bird videos, a thematic series that corresponds to their Hood by Air Spring 2009 line rightly entitled “bondage.” Hood by Air’s suggestive taste and playful antics made for one of the more intriguing runway shows at Fashion Week this year, drawing out a few roped and barred models. For those interested in purchasing or just experiencing the pieces for themselves, a Hood by Air pop-up shop will be hosted at the gallery through the weekend.

Would you let a man named Ruste Juxx watch your children? No? Well, the jokes on you because he has children! And he loves them so much he lets them guest on his songs. And they reciprocate that love by staying on beat (a breakbeat no less) and somehow gully-ing up their voice for the occasion, especially impressive considering that we were probably still scared of long division at that age. Ruste (pronounced ruhs-tee) Juxx's debut Indestructible is available October 28th on Duck Down Records. Hello, Brooklyn.

  • Video Premiere: Wild Yaks, "River May Come"

A life in music is like a yin yang. There is so much to love, but that becomes overwhelming. And that whelm occasionally turns into a muddled confusion which turns into an unhealthy amount of television watching and general artstic ponderance. Why doesn't all music sound like Nina Simone? Buddy Holly? Black Sabbath? Chic? Biggie? Gang of Four? Mariah Carey? But would we know their goodness if there was no badness from which to discern quality? What will free us from this bewitching haze? Wild Yaks will. They will do it with the hairy back of Rob Bryn, soaked from the abyss of a roadside waterfall and the pressed voices of beleaguered men yelling. We are pleased as punch to premiere their Matt Goldman directed video for "River May Come." May it revive you, too.

  • Video: GLC, "I Ain't Even on Yet"

Man, we had the weirdest dream last night. It was 2008, Wall Street had collapsed, Kanye was singing, a scary lady was running for vice president, Obama beat Clinton (ha!), Apple had made a phone that worked by rubbing on it (pause) and we had gotten soooo fat! Cold sweats for real. We woke up and our legs were doing that little half-running thing. Shit was crazy.

The power of the Pineapple Express trailer continues to astound as Jay-Z has recorded a brand new verse over M.I.A.'s "Boyz" which we originally posted the video for in June of 2007. Not to mention we put Maya on the cover in September of 2004. Hello, World! Obviously, we're kidding. We know these things take time, and we're genuinely excited to hear her voice all over the place. According to the Elitaste blog post where we found Wale's version, Interscope will be re-releasing her album from last year, Kala, with "Boyz" as the single. So it is not hard to imagine that it could sell upwards of 500,000 copies as it now stands at almost 350,000, which is honestly kind of ridiculous. In a good way. Regardless, we were waiting for a tagless version of the Jay-Z remix and now we have it. Decide for yourself which you like best.

Some issues of The FADER are more difficult to put together than others, with our editors pulling hair or pulling teeth to get the right stories in the right places at the right time. The music portion of FADER Number 57 was relatively easy for two reasons. First, it's our Photo Issue and many of its pages are filled with striking, provocative images by some of our favorite contributors. Second, cover stars Brightblack Morning Light and TV on the Radio both released albums that blew our minds, and the rest just fell into place based on the bounty of great new bands putting out music right now. Surprisingly, the accompanying audio podcast of music from the issue was a bigger challenge, what with all that excellent music, but we think we killed it. Grab it below and get the tracklist after the jump.
