It’s been a long time since we laced up and hit the rink, but, as the old proverb says: “Where Dipset goes, thou shall follow.” So on Saturday afternoon, we made our way over to Skate Key in the Bronx, where Juelz and Sizzla were performing at the Christmas For Katrina toy drive. Despite the promo vans on the curb, we weren’t really sure we were in the right place (Door dude: “Brittney’s 10th Birthday Party?”) but once inside, we were greeted by the oh-so-soothing DJ call of “Sizzla’s in the building!”
The F34 alum rocked his set solo, running through half-a-dozen heaters in a quick 15 minutes, with the “aww-shit!” highlight being "Solid As A Rock" over the “Never Scared” beat, as flipped a year or two back on a NYC radio and white-label hit. It's still epic, even on overloaded skate rink speakerboxes.
The AWOL birthday partiers got understandably hype for Kalonji, but Juelz had the Backstreet Boys moment(s) of the night, getting mobbed entering (and later exiting) the complex through the emergency doors, setting off security alarms alongside cries of “I touched his bandana!” To which we added, “Santana!”
In honor of the occasion, dude started off with uber-skate-jam “Run It”, even singing the hook. What made the night, though, was a sing-along of “Dipset (Santana’s Town)” with 6 year-old nephew Young Ja, who handled both the song’s “earmuffs” moments and the kid-speak (“Animals! Orangutans!”). Unfortunately, the expected “Shottas” duet never came through, nor did an impromptu, mid-rink “Hokey Pokey” led by Juelz’s posse, but never the less, we salute!
