You And Me And The Stephin Merritt

After spending a couple days with the Strokes' new album First Impressions Of Earth, we have totally and undoubtedly decided that our favorite song on it is "Ask Me Anything". It's a seemingly natural choice for us since, as the years have gone on, we've become more fond of the band's slow jams where Julian Casablancas really sounds like a sailor singing at the bar. But what it is about "Ask Me Anything" that we're really feeling so much is how awesomely, and unexpectedly, it sounds like the Magnetic Fields: the synthesized cello, the Stephin Merritt-style intoned chorus whose ending varies each time it comes around, the self-pitying sentiment, the casual in-joke references to summer camps named after Indian tribes and being "a coconut." We know comparing the Strokes to another band is so 2001, but understand that this is not a dis. We love the Strokes for doing this song, we want to give them a big kiss on the mouth because of it.
