Axis Of Awesome

Last Friday - aka World AIDS Day - we went to BAM for the first night of the Red Hot + Riot Fela Kuti tribute, where we got to watch Tony Allen play for the fourth time in the last month or so. If you've never seen him play, envy us. It's like he has a vertical axis splitting his head, and a horizontal axis across his shoulders, and he remains perfectly still - perfectly centered - on those axes, with only his hands and his feet dancing around the one beat below. It is incredible to watch. We were also happily blown away by the homies Yerba Buena as afrobeat house band, happy to be reminded why we got into John Medeski's playing in high school and happy to confirm our suspicions about Keziah Jones. Appropriately, we also noticed recently that London's mighty Honest Jon's Records has finally re-upped their website - if you haven't heard Allen's Lagos No Shaking, get thee there NOW and thing, and have a surf around while you're at it. Music a'bubble.
