With all due respect to Paul Haggis' after school special and the Department of Defense's training manual, we saw Guillermo Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth last night, and, discretionary weeping aside, we feel comfortable saying that it is one of the most powerful and amazing movies we've seen in a long time. We won't print spoilers, but rest assured that the director of Hellboy, yes Hellboy, comes through in dazzling fashion, creating a fairytale of such strength and imagination that we left the theater wondering why movies like it aren't made more often. Actually, we know why, but Del Toro makes us long for better. If the Academy feels it necessary to merely nominate Pan's for Best Foreign Film, that's on them, but we think it is one of the best films, period.
