Audio: Lil Keke, “I’m a G”

July 10, 2007

Even with a predictably flightless middle verse from Birdman Sr, Lil Keke's "Im a G" is our JAM: a crazily slow, melodic bassline (listen on a good system and it sounds like stoner metal), dramatic pauses before the choruses, and Keke's inimitable Southside swag. Yet we're still worried that "I'm A G" will meet the same fate as Keke's last two singles. "Break Em Off," his springtime collab with Paul Wall, was a Texas hit just starting to make inroads on radio and clubs in the rest of the country, but that momentum was squandered when attention swung to Paul's limp "I'm Throwed" with Jermaine Dupri instead. Almost a year before that, Keke's epic "Chunk Up The Deuce" (a posse cut with PW, Bun B and Pimp C) was sounding like it might become "Still Tippin Pt 2," but then...nada. RECORD PEOPLE OF EARTH, UNLEASH THE KEKE!
