On The Street: Metallic Stripes

Stripes usually give us the urge to go sailing—or at the very least stuff a crispy baguette under one arm—but this silver lining points to a retro-fashion future not seen since the days of Paco Rabanne and his sheet metal dresses, destined to be worn again in the year 2020.

On The Street: Yara Flinn of Nomia

There are a handful of designers on the planet that can model their clothes just as amazingly as they can design them. Diane Von Furstenberg is one of the lucky few, and so is Nomia designer Yara Flinn. Flinn named her line after a cheeky nymph in Greek mythology, although the NY-designer is a far shyer creature herself, and the spring 2010 presentation last month was the first time we’ve seen her step out in one of those glorious body-skimming designs. Images of the new collection after the jump.

On The Street: Yellow Polka Dots

The itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini may have died a slow death this summer, but it’s good to see the spirit of iconic bathing suits reincarnated for the fall. Since it’s probably a little too nippy for silky decolltage-baring blouses, we’re on the look out for anything knitted, cozy and dotty.

On The Street: Hanneli Mustaparta

If you are a fan of street style blogs of the high-fashion variety, then you’re probably already acquainted with long-legged internet star, Hanneli Mustaparta. When the Norwegian model-turned-MTV-VJ came to New York last month, she claims she cycled to fashion shows—in these ridiculous and amazing Acne Atacoma wedges—when her feet started to hurt. If you’re like us, and don’t believe that’s humanly possible, then just take a peep here.

On The Street: The Trashicist

Serving up asymmetry with Addams Family-meets-Apollonia whimsy, Elizabeth from The Trashicist could have walked straight off the Rad Hourani spring 2010 runway, just steps away from where we found her. A self-confessed sister of weirdness, she lists pessimism as her occupation (taxidermy and formaldehyde are apparently some of her more jolly interests). According to Elizabeth’s blog, Cassie commissioned her to design some of those signature hacked-up dresses for her birthday party, which might explain the shaved hairdo and moody look she’s been going for recently. Save for the Gareth Pugh fall ‘09 gravity-defying wedges, her outfit is entirely DIY which makes us feel a Crafternoon coming on…

On The Street: Chelsea

Sometimes putting together a good outfit is as simple as picking up the most flavorful classics off the bedroom floor—a good plaid shirt, some chinos and a simple pair of plimsoles (in this case the Opening Ceremony for Keds kicks that hit the shop floor earlier this month).

On The Street: Osborn Shoes

General Idea designer, Bumsuk Choi sent double-breasted jumpsuits and kaledioscope print drop-crotch pants down his runway. But what we saw tripping down the street right outside was just as catwalk-worthy. Miguel Pinzon must have been reading our minds (or at least the magazine) when he picked out these lovely pair of one-of-a-kind Osborn Shoes, featured in the current issue.

On The Street: Hard Shoulders in SoHo

There’s been a lot of hoo-ha about the return of the shoulder—cue Alexis Colby impersonators and Balmain knock-offs—but there are few fashion folk who have been able to knock this trend out of the park and into outer space like this gentleman we spotted walking his dog in SoHo yesterday.

On The Street: Wish You Were Here

The best shops of London’s Newburgh Quarter have exchanged places with the crop of Lower East Side stores for New York pop-up swap Wish You Were Here. We stopped by last weekend for the Ladies Lotto fashion show, where illustrator Shantell Martin tagged up willing body parts with her fantastical Carnaby Street characters. Caught in the crossfire between summer, fall and Shantell’s pen, Kayo stepped out in a look that straddled the seasonal divide nicely, layering a white jumpsuit and knit topper of her own design. With only one more week on this side of the pond, there’s a wrap party planned to shut down Orchard on September 13th.

On The Street: Mister Mort in Vegas

We’d barely hit the 24-hour mark here at the fashion tradeshows in Vegas, when our search for the best-dressed man in Sin City came to an abrupt end. Mister Mort might well have been out until the wee hours of the morning, subsisting on casino-generated oxygen and top shelf liquor, but he still manages to dazzle come Monday morning with a desert suit of Lawrence of Arabia proportions. Look closely and you’ll notice the psychedelic bowtie (there are only 10 of these Mister Mort designed pieces on the planet right now), that gives a little hippie twist on his spiffy.
