Gabriel Heatwave’s UK Funky Bashment Mixtape MP3

It was only a matter of time before the hottest dance music in London, with its African influences and syncopated jangling, began drifting into reggae territory. On Gabriel Heatwave’s mix for XLR8R, he shows exactly how made for each other UK funky house and bashment are with a vast selection of Jamaica’s hottest deejays (i.e. our girl Natalie Storm, above) and Britain’s most solid emerging funky scions. Not to go heavy on the “heatwave” references but this mix is extra hot fire, let’s face it, you always wanted to hear “Ramping Shop” interpolated with DJ Shredda’s garage-esque synth stabs. Tracklist after the jump.

Freeload: Two Mixtapes Killed by Assassin

In FADER #60, we positioned Assassin as dancehall’s perpetual next big thing, calling him the “permanent underdog.” And while he still hasn’t reached the worldwide status of a dude like Mavado, these two mixtapes, from Boardhouse Production and mixed by Xynk Fence Soundsystem, should prove that he at least deserves to. We’d recommend you assess your current mood before deciding which one to listen to first—one drop for easy vibes, dancehall if you want to wine pon your Aeron. Or you can shuffle them up and just marvel at the sandstorm that is Assassin’s voice.

Freeload: Assassin “Pum Pum Surveillance”

This the second Assasin track to make the blog in a week. Not because the collegiate dancehaller is on a roll (he is) or because producers Daseca murk the boards consistently (they do), but because “Pum Pum Surveillance” is far and away the best song title since “Ayo Technology.” And that’s not just because we’re pervy (we’re not?)

Freeload: Assassin, “Money” (Work Out Riddim)

We profiled dancehall producer Stephen “di genius” McGregor back in Issue 48 in our Beat Construction section, detailing his rise from son of Freddie to teenage riddim killer, and even projecting that his relationship with Sean Paul might launch him into the big time. SP is on McGregor’s new “Work Out” riddim, but it’s Assassin who really gets it with his “Money” version. Read the story after the jump and head over to McGregor’s MySpace to get the equally new “Overcome” before we put it up here and freak out some more over Mavado.

Freeload: Assassin f. Busy Signal, “Line Fi Line” & Assassin, “Surveillance”

Assassin’s Gully Sitn was a sleeper album for us, mostly because it was so dense and would often swing from being ultra hard and aggressive to touching and melancholy the next. We’ve been jamming a bunch of new songs from dude for the last couple days, trying to decide which two were the best. Check out “Surveillance” and “Line Fi Line” below, and then go hear some other new songs on Assassin’s MySpace.
