Atlas Sound Virtual 7-inch #8
- story Sam Hockley-Smith
Oh you know, no big deal. In between releasing an entire new album and playing shows Bradford Cox found a way to casually throw another virtual 7-inch onto the internet. Last time we wrote about one of these, we mentioned that the songs were an interesting departure for Atlas Sound, and while that was true, this edition just proves that more than anything Atlas Sound is becoming a catch all for whatever Cox wants to do—occasionally he’ll go in the ambient drone direction, or, like on this free release go incredibly sparse and quiet on “The Screens” and then power through a cover of doo-wop group The Five Discs’ “Doctor” like it’s not even a big deal.

Bradford Cox Hates Us
- story THE FADER
We love Bradford Cox. As the FADER staff looks back at the music of their collective early 20s to mid 30s, the music he’s made with Deerhunter and solo, as Atlas Sound, will inevitably stick out as a glaring touchstone. He is Bo Jackson if Bo Jackson also was Carl Lewis and Michael Jordan, plus Rahm Emanuel and Quincy Jones. He is a diversely eloquent prolific wizard from Georgia, writing soft pop of infinite angles all day and night. So we were happy to be able to sit with Cox for a bit during CMJ, bring him to Room 501 at Ace Hotel New York. Unfortunately, we did not vibe. We are not bros, he does not like us. You had a nice shirt and a good handshake and, god, how many times we’ve listened to Microcastle! Forgive us, Bradford!

Schnipper’s Slept On
- story Matthew Schnipper
Each Tuesday, FADER editor Matthew Schnipper highlights an underappreciated recent release he thinks we need to know about. This week it’s Atlas Sound’s Logos LP. (Which Schnipper bought but left at home because he listens to it all the time like a total fanboy.) Download “Walkabout,” buy Logos and read Schnipper’s thoughts after the jump.
ATP New York 2009: Babies and Drums
- story Peter Macia
- photo Abbey Braden
Boredoms’ drummer Yojiro (YO2RO) Tatekawa was carried into the main performance space on a platform carried by eight dudes, ten minutes into the already heart-exploding Boadrum 9 reprise at ATP New York last Sunday. He bashed on his drums so hard, it was unclear whether they would be able to hold him up. They did, and an hour later, Tatekawa and his bandmate Yoshimi were walking around with a bunch of awesome little Boredoms babies, on their way to participate in Oneida’s marathon 13-hour performance and then check out Boris’ volcanic replay of their album Feedbacker. Jim Jarmusch looked pretty psyched on Boris too. This was basically the vibe at Kutsher’s Country Club, a tarnished gem of the Catskills social set, where VIP is nonexistent and there was always something happening that was going to destroy your eardrums for, as of post time, at least two or three days.

Atlas Sound w. Noah Lennox, “Walkabout” MP3
- story Peter Macia
In FADER #49, Bradford Cox aka Atlas Sound told Black Lips’ Cole Alexander:
“It’s not good to be trapped in that same state of mind for your whole life. It’s a sad and difficult thing, actually. It’s like never getting over something and trying to work it out over and over and over again. The sounds may be a little more advanced, but I’m essentially making the same kind of art with the same kind of ideas that I was when I was a kid.”
On “Walkabout,” the first song from his upcoming album Logos (Oct 20, Kranky), Cox sings along with Noah Lennox, What did you want to see/ What did you want to be/ When you grew up, and generally seems to be focused on moving on, becoming an adult, or at least acknowledging that he can’t be a child anymore. The song samples the bubbling keys of “What Am I Going to Do” by the Dovers, as inspired by some tour bus song games between Cox and Animal Collective, and reflects that song’s simple and beautiful pop, with Cox and Lennox’s signature soft layers. If Logos is in any way as good as this song, we will not need much else in the fall.

Freeload: Bradford Cox Makes Record Nerds Cry
- story THE FADER
Because we are nerds we got kind of bummed out when we realized Bradford Cox was going to release a bunch of free Atlas Sound digital 7-inches on his blog. We want to hold the record in our hands after paying too much money for it! We want it to be limited to like 12 silkscreened copies! Actually, in the grand scheme of things, this is a great move. Free music on the internet is a given, but he’s gone the extra mile by including cover art and a lyrics sheet. The two songs on this “record” are an interesting direction for Atlas Sound, doing away with much of the murk of the album in favor of crisp melody and more upbeat tempo. Normally this is the part where we say something about an upcoming Atlas Sound album, but instead we’ll just recommend that you keep checking the Deerhunter blog for more.

Freeload: Animal Collective’s Micromixes for Bradford Cox
- story THE FADER
Bradford Cox wrangled his recent tourmates, Animal Collective, to post a few micromixes to the Deerhunter blog this weekend, and though we are all guilty of putting Avey and Panda on a little pedestal when it comes to the Animals, we gotta say it’s Geologist’s micromix that takes the bean burrito this go ’round. Yes, Panda’s and Avey’s give us profound insights into their psyche and creative inspirations, but Geo’s got, how you say, jams? Should we stop saying jams? We say it a lot and some people find it annoying but it’s not like we’re going Oh man, this tuna roll is total jam! We mean a very specific thing by it. Also, his use of Thin Lizzy is probably the most sublime of the three, he named his after something we know is good, and actually uses the word jam in his write up.

Freeload: Atlas Sound, Things I’ll Miss EP
- story THE FADER
Bradford Cox posts approximately one kajillion free new songs a day on the Deerhunter blog, and by our extremely precise mathematics that means he’s recording four songs a minute. Now he’s got a new four song EP (which apparently means he recorded the whole thing in one minute) about homesickness while on tour. Most of these are instrumental, so basically they are ultra conceptual with really literal titles about things he misses, like “My Car,” and “My Bed,” but that’s how Bradford rolls.

Freeload: Atlas Sound, “Another Bedroom”
- story THE FADER
Bradford posts so many new songs on his blog that we can barely keep track, it’s like he’s the shoegaze version of Lil Wayne. Now that the Atlas Sound album is getting released in the UK, he’s decided to include a whole bonus disc of extra jams and then when it gets re-relased in the US there will be a whole separate batch. How many blissed out Atlas Sound songs with depressing subject matter can we listen to? Apparently a whole lot!
