Video: The Jesus Lizard Brightens Up Pitchfork Music Festival
- story Rosemary Simon
We made it to Union Park in Chicago this past weekend just in time to catch a sideshow of indie rock babies, an unwelcome whiff of global warming, and of course, the 4th annual Pitchfork Music Festival. We spent most of the cloudy, spring-like weekend watching known FADER favorites The Very Best, Beirut, Grizzly Bear, Wavves, Lindstrom, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart etc, but the real highlight of the entire thing was The Jesus Lizard.
We’re not usually big on reunion shows or scrotal showcases, but David Yow brought back his intense, zig-zaggy stage swagger minus the “Tight and Shiny”— doing push-ups on stage, giving the audience hula lessons, spitting everywhere and diving into the audience within the first three seconds of the show—with grand mastery. We caught a little bit of it on our Flipcam—watch closely for some ancient hula styles and Yow’s tiniest fan taking stage diving notes from the sidelines.

Video: Beirut, “Concubine”
- story THE FADER
This Beirut video for a stand out track from his Mexico-recorded FADER-cover-ed album March of the Zapotec looks exotic until the New York City bus goes by. Which is kind of like the album itself. Both are good, whatever milieu. (via P4k)
Internet Sunshine: Kittens Frolicking to Beirut
- story THE FADER
We just went through Lauren Fleishman’s Beirut photos from our Issue #60 cover story, and we’re pretty sure that this kitten does not belong to Zach Condon. But, it really doesn’t matter. We have now watched it enough times to permanently burn his/her tiny feet into our short-term memories. Our day just got so much better!
Slideshow: Banda Jimenez of Teotitlan del Valle
- story THE FADER
For our current issue, FADER #60, we visited Beirut’s Zach Condon in Brooklyn and talked to him at length about his experience recording his new March of the Zapotec EP with Banda Jimenez in Oaxaca, Mexico. Never satisfied to just hear about these things secondhand, we sent our very own John Francis Peters down to Teotitlan del Valle to photograph the members of Banda Jimenez in their hometown. Above, watch the slideshow of Peters’ images set to Beirut’s “La Llorna,” and after the jump, read Julianne Shepherd’s essay which accompanied the photos in the magazine.

Zach Condon grew up with a map on his bedroom wall and when he needed a name for Beirut, he picked it from there. He’s since expanded his empire of city music through much of Europe, pretty much anywhere that loves an orchestra. But for his most recent release, March of the Zapotec, Condon got on a plane and headed south to the state of Oaxaca in Mexico to record his own version of their big brass band group blast. We spoke to Condon about that experience—and that of recording Zapotec’s other half, the bubbly home-recorded Holland EP—for a cover story in our current issue 60.
Freeload: The FADER Issue 60 Podcast
- story THE FADER
Because this is the Style Issue and we couldn’t figure out a way to turn clothing into sound, we decided it would be just as good if we had our pal DJ Rezound put together a collection of the music that was featured in the issue. That music includes a new age love song from Bat for Lashes, Beirut’s collaboration with Teotitlan del Valle’s Banda Jimenez, Gen F jams from San Francisco’s Girls (featuring no actual girls), Nite Jewel, Assassin, Brick Bandits, Sholi and a whole bunch more. As always, download the mix for free below, check the tracklist after the jump and don’t forget to read the magazine that it goes with, available for free download here, or available for a $5.99 physical download from some guy at the magazine store’s hands into your own hands.
Download the FADER 60 mix as an mp3 (right click, save as)

New Owen Cook-directed video from Zach Condon’s upcoming Beirut/Realpeople double EP March of the Zapotec/Holland. We will have a lot more to say about this project in the coming weeks, but for now enjoy this animated retelling of the Weeping Woman. (via Stereogum)
