At The Bar With Southern Comfort: Born Ruffians, “I’m On Fire”

In our third episode in the ongoing series, At The Bar With Southern Comfort, in which we travel to some of our favorite new bands’ hometowns (or as near as we can get) and film them covering some of their favorite bands’ best songs, we asked the friendliest Canadians we know to meet us at a bar in Toronto’s Little Italy district.  Luke LaLonde from Born Ruffians came bearing only a guitar in his hands and a familiar song in his head.  A Springsteen cover may have been better suited for last week’s Jersey Shore, but we still love you Canada!  Stay tuned in the coming weeks as we travel across North America racking up frequent flyer miles and good times.

Born Ruffians have just slipped through the cracks. We’ve put them in our magazine and mentioned them plenty of times on thefader.com but they can’t seem to get a break. Or maybe up here from the 13th floor our view is fogged and Born Ruffians are getting mobbed by crowds and young monks scatter rose petals at their feet before shows at six hundred capacity clubs. But probably not. Maybe these Daytrotter Sessions will help. “Foxes Mate For Life” is our favorite of the bunch.

Video: Born Ruffians, “I Need A Life”

Born Ruffians make cooking seem really fun. They recklessly chop green peppers, sing as they wash potatoes and laugh a lot. The song is called “I Need a Life,” but life would be pretty good if you were in a cabin with your best buds. And then the end of this video happens and we are like Oh gross maybe all that would totally suck actually.

FADER TV: In Bed With Born Ruffians

Canadians Born Ruffians and FADER TV field reporters David Bevan and Hanly Banks all share one thing in common: they’re homeless. Wait, not true, Bevan lives in a glass castle and Banks sleeps in our fashion closet. HOWEVER, when Born Ruffians visit New York City they stay in the last flop on the Bowery and go to the bathroom in their pants. Sound dubious? It just might be, but they also love Ellen Page so there you go. Regardless, they play great pop rocks, we like them, and at the end of this clip they give us a very likeable accapella + handclaps rendition of “Badonkadonkey” from Red, Yellow & Blue, the original of which you can download at RCRD LBL.

Born Ruffians put out an EP a couple years back that we seriously could not get enough of—maybe it was their ability to somehow be sloppy and precise at the same time, creating catchy pop gems that are built on quick drum fills and clipped guitar. “Foxes Mate For Life” is no different, it’s stripped down and aggressively catchy and no instrument is superfluous. Born Ruffians’ first full album, Red, Yellow And Blue comes out on Warp on March 4th, and is produced entirely by Rusty Santos (of Panda Bear and Animal Collective fame).

Video: Born Ruffians, “Hummingbird”

Listening to Toronto’s Born Ruffians always makes us want to spazz and jerk around but our doctor is getting pissed about that, so we’ll leave it to the magic of Hollywood in this new video. Also, never eat a hummingbird. They are magical, mythical and have very little meat.
