Backstage at Cassette Playa Spring 2010

The press release for Cassette Playa’s spring 2010 show read “dune gone dubstep,” which made perfect sense when the lights went up on her collection yesterday afternoon at Santos. After a brief flirtation with Celtic symbolism and heavy metal last season, Carrie Munden went back to her ravey roots, and looked to the Middle East for graphic inspiration. We snuck backstage for a closer look at those awesome prints—Munden meshed black and white Arabic script with photo collage, and even layered on her own gold signage (something like a Prince symbol) on the statement pieces for good measure. Weirdly, most of the models were stomping around in snow boots, a fitting topsy-turvy styling counterpoint to the desert-inspired headgear and yarmulke baseball caps. The overall effect was Tank Girl meets Mad Max in a gigantic rave-o-drome in the middle of the Sahara.

Fashion war paint!? We’re in! Recently we stumbled upon this interview with Carri Munden talking about…Dunks? Not that she even has a pair, but humor us. In between the sneaker advertising, Carri gets to the bottom of all that neon, explains her “take to the streets” theory, and reminds us that pink is a unisex color. But really, we just like to get real close up to Carri’s very un-neon frames and charming pronunciation of dunk as “duunnk.”
