Weekday Fall 09 Should Be On Our Doorstep
- story Chioma Nnadi
Now that Topshop is within spitting distance of the Hudson, it’s time to start lusting for other European stores that should have US outposts but don’t, namely Weekday, an off-shoot of Sweden’s Cheap Monday. CM’s founders, Örjan Andersson and Adam Friberg, started with a second-hand store in Stockholm called Weekend (it was only open on Saturdays and Sundays), and from the root of that tiny little shop springs their empire. If you’ve ever been to a Weekday store then you’ll know there’s usually an entire level dedicated to jeans and an upper level of non-denim goodies, including vintage pieces and indie designers. The fall lookbook is a mish-mash of all the many labels available at the Weekday store, vintage and non-vintage. Even if we can’t bribe our Scandinavian lovechild to ship us the whole collection, the Village People stylings and GI Joe flourishes (beanie and military boots for the boys) are good inspirational bookmarks if nothing else.
Style TV: Interview with Carl Malmgren of Cheap Monday
- story THE FADER
We persuaded Cheap Monday designer Carl Malmgren to take a little break from putting together the mammoth denim installation that he and the rest of the Swedish design team were busy working on. Malmgren gave us the back story behind their customization world tour and a breakdown of the awesomely hellish process that each pair of world tour jeans goes through before it can be labeled perfectly distressed. The Cheap Monday pop-up store-within-a-store is still going on at Inven.tory in SoHo, with a ton of great Cheap Monday denim and non-denim on sale. We think we might have even spotted a few limited edition world tour pieces up for grabs.
On the Street: Cheap Monday Customization Tour Party
- story THE FADER
The Cheap Monday design team have been in town for the past week toiling piece-by-piece on a denim installation at downtown store Inven.tory, the US pit stop on their customization world tour. We managed to get a quick snap of Swede Carl of Cheap Monday who is modeling one of a limited series of jeans, all carefully hand-distressed and only $70—although we’re pretty sure they sold out in a matter of hours. There are, however, tons of other cheap and cheerful garms to look out for at pop-up store, including satisfyingly trippy prints by WKND, a capsule collection by Cheap Monday. This outer space outfit we spotted on one party-goer is the kind of all-over-print we can cosmically appreciate.
