Freeload: Chip Tha Ripper, “Amazing Tree”
- story THE FADER
Chip tha Ripper got into FADER #54 last winter because he was wildly refreshing, having a good time rapping about the exact same shit everyone raps about, but piling creative punchlines and made up slang on top of each other on every song he released. It turns out he had a whole mess of jams in the chamber, as evidenced by the newest leak “Amazing Tree,” which is about—what else—rap and weed! Original, but Chip acts like he’s pioneering the topics and as long as he’s this infectiously fun, we will support him over all the other mediocre whatever rappers.

Unless you’re 3-6 Mafia or Project Pat, it’s pretty difficult to pull off rapping about strippers over slightly dubious beats that sound like the opening music to 2 Fast 2 Furious, but Chip tha Ripper manages alright.

Ever since we first heard Chip tha Ripper we’ve been waiting for him to dive into full on synth rap mode. With “I Know,” he’s basically cannonballed into the pool.

Oh shit what a coincidence two rappers we featured in our magazine are on a song together HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? Actually we’re gonna gracefully hand this one over to the wonderful miracle known as The Earth’s Natural Geography because Chip tha Ripper (F54) and Kid Cudi (F54) are both from the rap epicenter of the world (Cleveland). We assumed a collaboration was in the works since we first laid eyes on this picture like ten minutes ago, and while we love both dudes (but are less enthusiastic about Cudi’s Bape tuxedo t-shirt), the real highlight of this is the beat by Rami & Dez, who throw barely-there drums, a woodpecker, another woodpecker, haunted house synths and little bits of triumphant horns into the mix.

- story THE FADER
Chip tha Ripper is one of the more entertaining rappers without an album out right now, and even though he covers the same topics as usual (the type of jeans he’s wearing, the type of shoes, SBs this time if you were wondering) we’re still totally into it. HOWEVER, one question we’ll raise is this: When we spoke to Chip a couple months back he told us about how he liked DC Shoes because of what they represented to him, which was a way for him to abstractly unite his white and black fans and show them all that he is constantly on his grind (in the skateboarding sense and in the Never Not Working sense). Now that he’s rapping about SBs does his allegiance to DC still stand? This is clearly a really important question for us, and it’s one that wasn’t answered in our Gen F on Chip from FADER 54, which you can read after the jump.

- story THE FADER
A few weeks ago on the Q train some kids were talking about rappers they like when one of them started going on and on about some dude named Chip Tha Ripper being the “next shit.” Sounded dubious, but The FADER editors keep our ear to the streets and it turns out dude is actually pretty awesome. He’s from Cleveland, a city which he runs apparently, has a weird, halting, raspy voice and jokes for days. We’re putting up a couple sample tracks from the tape, but by all means listen to the whole thing.
