NYC: Sean Paul, Ricky Blaze, Badda Badda Gals + More Wear their Sunglasses at Night

Tomorrow night Max Glazer and Kenny Meez celebrate the 10th anniversary of Federation Soundsystem presented by Sunglass Hut, Business Class and, duh, Federation Sound, at Santos Party House. That means Max and Kenny have been repping dancehall since the last millenium. Like since Sean Paul was an underground artist. Since before Cipha Sounds was a member of the Big Dog Pitbulls. Since before FADER was a magazine. Since when Guiliani was Mayor and Al Gore was the next President and Max was the reggae buyer at Fat Beats. Since a long-ass time, basically. Lucky for us though this event promises to be less of a nostalgia-fest and more of a nowadays thing, and since Sunglass Hut is the sponsor we can only assume everyone will be properly shaded up and Bruk Up’s new “Sunglasses” dance will be getting heavy rotation (we also assume the whole crew will be dipped in Lacoste ‘cause we saw Max and the Badda Badda Gals walking by Habana Outpost with a baby-stroller full of new Lacoste kicks last week—true story). And finally, since those gals are guaranteed to perform alongside Sean Paul, Ricky Blaze and Cipha Sounds, we assume the door situation will be banana clips and you’d better get there early. Come true!
NYC: Fool’s Gold Family & Friends Holiday Bash

If you live in New York, you’ve probably experienced streets crowded with thousands of people getting into the non-denominational holiday spirit by now. Here at the office we are staying above the fray and enjoying the FADER lobby holiday display, complete with robot Santa Claus, but we will be heading out to the totally free, totally fun Fool’s Gold Family & Friends Holiday Bash this Friday at Twelve21 (12 West 21st St.) featuring our dudes Nick Catchdubs, Sammy Bananas, The Brothers Macklovitch (that would be A-Trak and Dave 1 of Chromeo), Cipha Sounds and, um, DJ PREMIER. To celebrate ten years (!) of The FADER we enlisted F1 cover star Funkmaster Flex and F58-featured Cipha Sounds to help us spend time drinking complimentary Bass Ale. The dudes played many of the rap classics that were inspirational to us over the last decade: Wu-Tang, an entire block of Boot Camp Clik, a few Tribe songs, etc. We’re not ashamed to admit that most of us were wilding the whole time because so was everyone else. We may be all about looking forward, but sometimes it’s nice to take a step back and hang out in a room full of balloons and people wearing Russian fur hats.

Keeping with artists’ blogs is getting to be as bad as keeping up with random dude’s blogs in ‘03. Somebody collate this shit! Cipha Sounds just put up this lost gem from 1998 of a Nore pre-debut album sampler, mixed by Cipha himself and hosted by Flex, complete with an up-to-date definition of “Tunnel bangers.” That’s edutainment.

Don’t Get Gassed!

It honestly takes a stand-up session with Tracy Morgan to really get your head around the sheer scumbag awesomeness of his humor, 30 Rock box set notwithstanding. Along with the likes of Donnell Rowlings bka Ashy Larry, Tracy’s been a regular at Cipha Sounds’ monthly comedy show,
Don’t Get Gassed, so we weren’t surprised to find him hobnobbing in the crowd this week before his set at Comix. Ciph’s been lining up funnymen from all corners of New York for the past five months, and has his own sideline in giggles with shit-talking interludes (including sidekick, Yogi the silent Bodyguard) prepped for each episode.
