Freeload: We Just Listened to Four Mixtapes in a Row
- story THE FADER
The last time we actually sat down and listened to a bunch of mixtapes that all came out on the same day, we had a beautiful apartment in Manhattan, a carton of cigarettes cost a dollar and dudes actually still sold mixtapes on Canal Street. Now we share a wall-less storage space in Bushwick, beg loosies off publicists and get our songs one at a time. But yesterday reminded us a little bit of that ol’ special feeling as Google Canal Street gave us a handful of new mixtapes from GLC, DG Yola, Charles Hamilton and that surprisingly crazy Jay-Z/Coldplay project from Mick Boogie, all of which we thoroughly enjoyed listening to in their entireties. Get them all below… we’ll be downstairs buying two dollar rainbow keffiyehs.

Freeload: DG Yola & The XO Band Live
- story THE FADER
We’ve been riding for DG Yola basically forever, had pretty much accepted that his album would never come out, and were keeping the music we do have on repeat and watching the Youtube videos of dude having more fun freestyling than like 90% of rap to keep us happy. Luckily, the rumor mill tells us the album still has legs, and now we also have Mr Singh, who has been throwing events that pair dudes we like to put on our covers (Killer Mike and Sleepy Brown) with go-go bands. Last week Yola performed with the XO Band and it sounds like he decimated the stage. if you’re skeptical, download some of the live recordings below or watch the rehearsal video we posted about here, and hit the next event this Friday with Joe Scudda, Joi, PJ Morton, and the XO Band at Django (495 Peachtree St.) in Atlanta.

Freeload: New DG Yola “Return Of Da Great” + Shawty Lo Remix
- story THE FADER
We recently heard rumors that Yola might not have a record deal anymore. That would be a shame if it’s true, but it’s not like we’re all that tied to release dates on here anyway. Yola just put up a couple new songs on his MySpace, one of which we were able to procure for you to keep—the other one you’ll just have to deal with a stream. The first is the Arkatech Beatz remix of Shawty Lo, sounding more like Mr. Hanky by the minute, with a clean-up Yola verse, but the second is all Yola and is actually the jawn. We will do our best to get it for you, but don’t sleep, because MySpace song samples ARE THE BEST.

ATL: Take Yola To The Go-Go
- story THE FADER
DJ Mr Singh has been throwing parties at Django’s in Atlanta for a hot minute now, helping import Washington DC go-go music to the A by pairing the likes of Killer Mike and Sleepy Brown with live go-go bands. We even sponsored one. Y’know, because we are regional pop culture fetishists. And LOVERS OF MUSIC. This Friday (5/9), Singh continues his hot streak of pairing FADER faves with cranking live percussion by inviting the unbreakable DG Yola to take the stage backed by the XO Band. How ill is their congo-ed out version of “Ain’t Gon Let Up” from the rehearsal sesh?!? Flyer after the jump.
DG Yola, “Money Money” (prod Jim Jonsin)
- story THE FADER
According to DGYola.com, DG Yola’s Gutta World is finally coming out on April 24th. That could mean this year. It could mean last year. It could mean 4856. We just don’t know. And that is what is called building anticipation, kids. In the meantime, we’ll just keep posting these random tracks produced by Jim Jonsin as they float across the internet because Yola’s voice is like music to our ears.
Freeload: DG Yola, “I Know U Like Dat”
- story THE FADER
Almost 2 years after his epic striver’s jam “Ain’t Gon Let Up” didn’t get nearly as big as it should have, and less than a year after being shot through the face in a botched robbery, you have to wonder if the biggest frustration in DG Yola’s career has been watching Soulja Boy become a cultural phenomenon by basically jacking “Ain’t Gon Let Up” and replacing its crushing energy with a funny catchphrase. It’s been a minute since Yola put out a song that made us think he still had it, but “I Know U Like Dat” might be it, as dude finally sounds back to full strength. It also helps that the production sounds like a carnival ride.
