Premiere: The Amazing, “Code II” MP3

Editors of The FADER have reveled in the acid rock psychosis of Sweden’s Dungen for years now, ogling Gustave Estjes’ skin tight flares and seeing really special Hobbit visions when the band performs live. But we understand these harsh times might call for a softer side of psych. New Estjes-less Dungen side project The Amazing might be just what the alternative medicine specialist ordered. We’ve been listening to their self-titled album (out now on Subliminal Sounds) anytime we want to daydream about being pot farmers in a sylvan bliss, running in slo-mo with armfuls of organic, yet lucrative crops, maybe naked with a pair of moccasins on. While that may not be your reaction, let it be the image that lingers in your heads. The band, which consists of Reine Fiske and John Holmegard from Dungen along with music vets Christopher Gunrup and Fredrik Swahn, rambles from gentle paeans like “Deportation Day” to heartbreaking sunset rock on “Dragon,” both of which you can hear at their MySpace. But Mexican Summer sent us “Code II,” a song that sits in the middle of the album and splits it open with some relatively sprawling electric guitar riffs, freaky keys and spaced-out vocals. The song will be available as a 10″ vinyl single in October b-sided with “To Ska and Back,” which hopefully sounds nothing like its title.

Party in the Pines at Big Sur, Part 1: Dungen

We spent this past weekend at Party in the Pines, a low-key festival in a sun-dappled northern California forest presented by Kemado Records, Mexican Summer and (((folkYEAH!))).  FADER TV captured all of the many ultra-lax musicians on hand—Kurt Vile, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Dungen, Saviours, Vietnam, and more—and will somehow put up all the footage this week if we don’t decide to just linger on forever in hazy Big Sur. If there is a better way than this to bid summer one last hurrah, let us know.

Video: Dungen at the Levi’s®/FADER Fort NYC

The mighty Swedes that are Dungen closed out the Levi’s®/FADER Fort NYC on Saturday with a rousing rendition of “Du Ska Inte Tro Att Det Ordnar Sig” off their last album Tio Bitar. Evident in this video: Gustav’s haircut and Dungen’s badassedness. Not evident in this video: FADER staff dancing and clinking free drinks (Bass, Sparks and SoCo, naturally) in celebration of the end of CMJ. Thanks to everyone who came and everyone who helped out. We’ll be putting more stuff up as it comes through.

Freeload: Dungen, “Mina Damer Och Fasaner”

A few months ago, FADER TV broadcast Dungen’s NYC debut of material from their new album 4 at a stripped-down private show at Le Poisson Rouge. You can watch the whole thing above, including a low-key translation of “Mina Damer Och Fasaner,” which means, uh, we don’t know, but it’s a great song. Below, download the album version, and make sure to scoop up the vinyl of 4 when it comes out on October 28th, the Tuesday following Dungen’s Friday CMJ show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg.

FADER TV: Dungen Performs Their New Album… Jazz Style!

We’ve made no secret of our collective love for Dungen over the years, and their forthcoming album 4 (out on Kemado on September 30th) has done nothing to diminish our passion. So we were obviously excited to be invited to film the band’s mastermind Gustav Ejstes and percussionist Johan Holmegard perform songs from the album at New York City’s La Poisson Rouge last week. Instead of their normal acid rock monster stacks, Gustav banged out some new and old joints on the baby grand and acoustic guitar while Johan killed it softly on drums. It was pretty mystical, but that may have just been the crazy lights. Regardless, here is the show in its entirety, divided by song, equaling jam session.

Audio: Dungen, “Satt Att Se”

It kinda goes without saying that we’re going to at least listen to any band that has made an 18 minute song at any point in their career that, translated into English, is called “Midsummer Bong.” MIDSUMMER BONG! Lucky for everyone involved, the band that did that is Dungen, and they are awesome. So awesome in fact, that we put Gustav Ejstes, the main man behind Dungen, on the cover of F27 and then proceeded to never get tired of their music ever. On their MySpace they’re streaming “Satt Att Se,” from their upcoming album 4, which Ejstes will be previewing in New York next week in an acoustic session that you’ll able to catch on FADER TV shortly thereafter. Also, here’s a fun fact: Ejstes used to make hip hop and he talks about it along with a whole bunch of interesting stuff in this interview we did with him for this very website. You can traverse the archives and find it (always rewarding), or read it here.
