Farmer Dave Scher at The Levi’s/FADER Fort NYC
- story THE FADER
The last time we talked to Farmer Dave Scher, he was literally standing inside of a tree at Big Sur’s Party in the Pines, enlightening us on the farming situation in NorCal (wink nudge). Much to our enjoyment, we were able to continue the conversation over at Ace Hotel New York (where Dave had just accidentally gotten locked in the bathroom). After springing himself, he came up to Room 501 at the Levi’s®/FADER Fort and played us an absolutely beautiful cover of “Sea of Love,” even giving a little explanation of the song’s origin. Farmer Dave knows everything, man.

Party in the Pines, Episode 4: Farmer Dave Scher
- story Hanly Banks
A couple weekends ago we spent some time at Party in the Pines, a low-key festival in a sun-dappled northern California forest presented by Kemado Records, Mexican Summer and (((folkYEAH!))). FADER TV captured all of the many ultra-lax musicians on hand—Kurt Vile, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Dungen, Saviours, Vietnam and more—and will somehow put up all the footage eventually. The multi-talented Farmer Dave Scher performed with multiple acts that day on his slide guitar, but we caught his charming solo act on camera.

Audio Premiere: Farmer Dave Scher, “Bab’lone Nights”
- story THE FADER
When it comes to unsung heroes in FADER world, few are more heroic than Farmer Dave Scher. His discography includes production or instrumentation on records from our favorites Jenny Lewis, Dios and Vietnam (not even on discogs.com! Someone update that). He was also a member of the loved-in-some-circles Beachwood Sparks and All Night Radio, and wrote a Vinyl Archeology on the steel guitar in FADER #45 that included a mix that was passed around the office like cupcakes. Now he’s finally bringing the heat with a solo record full of innovative folk jams, beachside dub psych and weird electronic flourishes. Check out first track “Bab’lone Nights” below. It sounds like Scher’s been listening to a lot of Springsteen until you catch the swirling synth buzzing underneath and realize he might have been listening to a bunch of Suicide as well. Look out for a Farmer Dave 7-inch on Mexican Summer July 1st, to be followed by full LP Flash Forward to Good Times, out August 18th on Kemado.
