Freeload: WMIG x The FADER Present the We Make it Good Mix Series v. 8: Free Blood

Remember that really cool dude in high school who put together awesome mixtapes that would turn you on to the craziest shit ever? No? Okay you might have been that guy then. Either way, chances are Brooklyn skronky dance outfit Free Blood, who we profiled in FADER #54, are dropping some unknown gems into their installment of the WMIG mixtape series. We’re fully weirded out by Herman’s Rocket’s “Disco Woman,” which pretty much amounts to an alien invasion or our ear canals via theremin, as well as the bass pop of Wight Light Orchestra’s completely out there “Chaos & Consciousness”. All that is mixed in with jams from NY standbys Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Little Walter, The Dirtbombs and a closing track from the always welcome Cameo. There’s a bunch more packed in there as well and all of it is awesome. So when you’re done listening, feel free to head over to We Make It Good and peruse previous mixes from Crookers, XXXChange, Blaqstarr and more.

Wild Promo: Free Blood Heart Soap

Reaching into this package felt like pulling a bunch of lollipops from a dark piñata. But instead we pulled out a shrink wrapped, heart-shaped mess of organic castille soap with hints of blood orange, black pepper and rose hips handmade by noise pop duo Free Blood. Their note accompanying this unexpected treat:

In honor of the new year we have cooked up a fresh batch of lovingly made Free Blood Soap for your enjoyment and personal care! We cook up these soaps personally in our kitchen, infusing them with blood oranges and black pepper. It is evidence of our commitment to making sure our listeners emerge freshly scrubbed and gently scented after a long day of work or before a long night of play. Consider this a life-sized reminder of the tireless motor that keeps us true.

RCRD LBL Freeload: Free Blood, “Grumpy”

What more appropriate band to post about on Hollerween than Free Blood? Probably a bunch, but RCRD LBL just put up an exclusive song by Brooklyn’s favorite coeds and it has an Obama reference, making it the most apt song of the hour. And that’s all we need here in the creepy, crawly blog cave! Also, the song is really good.

Flyer Alert: Get Meta!

You’d expect any advertising for a free show featuring art-damaged superfriends (and FADER faves) Professor Murder, Free Blood, Pink Skull and Kingdom to be appropriately random. But this one goes the extra mile, mashing a Mad Magazine jack from Al Jaffe with an amazing pride week colorway and a bad record store joke, minus the joke. If the show is half as stoned as this flyer, we’re in for a fun Friday.

FADER TV: Free Blood Live At The FADER 54 Party

For our latest issue, we decided to throw a party with some free Bass Ale in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, but somehow we ended up in a place called Shangri-La in a part of this land that we are still not sure was New York or even America. Our cab driver was not pleased! Regardless, Free Blood found the place and proceeded to make the people in it sweaty and happy. We videotaped it for all of those who were not in the vicinity. You may watch it above. And you may read about Free Blood in the Gen F section of FADER 54, freely downloadable here.

We piled in a grip of Bass Ale and head up to the tippy top of Greenpoint, Brooklyn this past Wednesday to celebrate the release of our Aaliyah icon issue. Dri, Blaqstarr and Free Blood, all featured in the issue, performed in the palacious Shangri La. Dri covered Aaliyah while wearing a dress of dollar signs, Blaqstarr jammed out Baltimore club, Free Blood (backed by the Brothers played a no wave ebb-and-flower, guitar shred and yelpy yap. Reminder: FADER Party Tonight In Greenpoint

It is starting to get dark, so we thought we’d give you one last reminder that we’re celebrating the release of our icon issue at Shangri-La in Greenpoint tonight from 9-1. In addition to performances by Dri and Free Blood and DJ sets by Blaqstarr, there’s complimentary Bass Ale and Black Swan wine. Drink both, but don’t mix them together, or actually, mix them together if you want but that willl be weird and gross. Flyer after the jump.

Audio/Video: Free Bloods

Brooklyn’s Free Blood has been killing us lately with their co-ed bass assaults, so even though we were a little non-plussed by this video at first, we gave it time. Madeline and John appear to have two different concepts going, but payoff comes in the form of some pretty awesome Cremaster-style jams at the end with Madeline writhing under a bunch of black ribbon and the two coming together in the desert. And therein is a life lesson…

Coincidentally, we checked in on their MySpace and found this incredibly awesome “Grumpy” joint for which they chose a photo of Barack in a leather jacket on their audio player, which our high school art teacher once called “juxtaposition.” Great teacher.

Audio: Free Blood, “Quick and Painful (Hot Chip Remix)”

Who you really think gets free blood? The Count that’s who. He’s like, “One…Two…Thuhree… Gimme blood.” Ding dong. He’s got it like that. So does Hot Chip. Seriously, straight fire. The original is kinna crazy too and you can hear that on Free Blood’s MySpace.
