Video Premiere: Poirier f. Face-T, “Wha La La Leng”

The video for Poirier’s lauded soca jammy jam is exactly like this recurring dream we have, where we’re in a house of mirrors and there are multiple versions of one dancing dude moving his foot around not quite in unison, and there is a Canadian ragga MC talking to us about Poirier. Really! Except in the dream, the ragga MC is whispering and wearing one of those creepy clear masks. Our psyches are marginally more Lynchian than this video. Even so, Toronto is crazy psychic, and Poirier is our favorite arctic-weather soca producer. Also amazing, he’s about to go on a bannnnanaaas WORLD TOUR with Face-T on the mic and Christian Olsen on drums! Dates after the jump.

One of the best things about Ghislain Poirier is that when he remixes a song he has little to no respect for anything about said song other than its empty spaces because he can fill them with exploding bass. For Major Lazer’s big single, which is notably built on a Black Flag sample surf guitar, Poirier dumps the punk surfing altogether and replaces it with his manic Wha-La-La-Leng soca riddim, which is exactly 137% more likely to inspire a desire to break stuff than “Six Pack” “Surfing Safari”, no offense to 1984 Henry Rollins 1962 Dennis Wilson.

Video: Maga Bo’s Mini-Doc on Ghislain Poirier

An Interview with Ghislain Poirier from Maga Bo on Vimeo.

When Maga Bo isn’t making crazy beats or blowing our minds with his setlists, he’s making super interesting mini-documentaries on his friends—who are equally crazy beatmakers and mind-olympians. In this latest installment, Montreal sweet potato Ghislain Poirier explains his origins as a DJ, being an outsider/insider and acting as a conduit between nations—in between live shots and awesome weird animation. Go here to watch his other interviews with the likes of DJ/Rupture, Diplo, Daniel Haaksman of Man Recordings, etc. You know, people you are into.

Soca didn’t crossover as huge as we thought it would (with the exception of F43 cover star Machel Montano, who regularly packs entire stadiums and travels with an army of people on stilts), but Ghislain Poirier has taken some of our favorite parts about soca (the parts that sound like people raving on a trampoline), and made them even more intense. “Get Crazy,” featuring Mr. Slaughter, is from Poirier’s Soca Soundsystem EP, out Feb. 17 on Ninja Tune.

Cosmopolitan Bass, the newest mix by Ghislain Poirier fulfills the dreams we never knew we had (the repurposing of the whiny synth from Kriss Kross’ “Jump,” Assassin and Machel Montano appearing within five tracks of each other), and also puts us onto songs that make us want to punch holes in walls constantly (in a good way). Curiously (actually not that curiously) Poirier will be DJing the New Yorker Dance Party as part of the upcoming New Yorker festival.

Video: Ghislain Poirier, “Hit And Red”

Normally we’re not ones for animated music videos because they tend to be not very good, and it’s always hard to tell if they are official or just made by some huge fan with a Wacom tablet staying up all night drinking Orange Crush. But this one is basically a glorified iTunes visualizer with an inexplicable last couple of seconds, and it’s official because Discobelle said so, so it gets a pass. But seriously, what’s going on in those last couple seconds?

Video: Ghislain Poirier f. Face-T, “Blazin”

So this video is pretty Canadian. We’re mostly saying that because hockey is sort of involved and also because Ghislain Poirier is from Montreal. But anyway, we wouldn’t normally associate hockey in any way with the word “blazin” (no offense hockey), but whatever works dudes!
