Freeload: Desire, “Mirroir Mirroir”
- story THE FADER
Johnny Jewel is kind of a genius, the madman beat maestro behind F53 cover stars Glass Candy with a serious sweet tooth for Italo disco and booty bass. Desire is the new project he started with some woman named Megan. Based on looking at their myspace, they seem like they are into: synthesizers, Jean Paul Belmondo/Godard, long walks on the beach and tweaking English words to appear vaguely French. “Mirroir Mirroir” lyrics are cribbed from a fairy tale and its synths give an eerie haunted quality to Snow White’s evil stepmother. Why are stepmothers in fairy tales always evil? We kind of like ours actually. Anyway we also want to sing “Rhiannon” over this for the melody and the similar witchy/fog machine vibe.

SF: Glass Candy and Friends at The Mezzanine Tonight
- story THE FADER
Tonight the Italians Do It Better crew are descending on the Mezzanine in San Francisco for a night of forward-thinking italo disco influenced jams, as F53 cover stars Glass Candy, along with new Johnny Jewel project Desire, Twisted Wires and DJ Omar join forces for a night of good times and better music. Tickets are 15 bucks at the door (a pretty good deal if you ask us), and, as always, full flyer is after the jump.
Freeload: Glass Candy, “Animal Imagination”
- story THE FADER
Since we put them on the cover of F53, Glass Candy have apparently been hard at work on a new album. We’re sure that’ll be bonkers, but while we wait until it comes out sometime next year, the Portland duo have put together Deep Gems, a collection of rarities, b-sides and singles that we have seen in zero stores on the east coast. Download “Animal Imagination” from the compilation below, and then hit up the Italians do it Better blog for more info on their upcoming releases and a mix from Tiedye from earlier this month that we totally overlooked.

Video: Glass Candy Live At Some Place
- story THE FADER
What is there left to say about Glass Candy that wasn’t said in our cover feature on them in FADER 53? Probably plenty, but that is not our job. Our job is to point you to cool things to hear and see that are sometimes related to the stories in our magazine, sometimes not. And sometimes we’ll have additional things to say, but not this time. Someone just put this up on Antville, so we are posting it too, and also to the other Glass Candy videos by the same “motion picture collective” known as Get Salazar. Click on the links below to make it happen.

FADER 53: Glass Candy
- story THE FADER
When you think about it, it’s kind of crazy that Glass Candy live in Portland because they make chilled out italo disco that sounds like it is from New York in the 1980s. Either way, we jumped coasts and spent a couple days with Italians Do It Better main dude Johnny Jewel and Glass Candy singer Ida No and tracked their transition from being a totally hated band to a totally loved one. Check out T Cole Rachel’s feature from F53 after the jump, along with home and studio video tours from Jewel and No.
FADER TV: Hanging Out With Glass Candy
- story THE FADER
For our FADER 53 cover, we headed to Portland and hung with the elusive and awesome Glass Candy. Above check out Glass Candy beatmaker and Italians Do It Better mastermind Johnny Jewel showing us around his studio and music, and then make the jump to see Ida No’s crazy house with lots of clothes, a cat that is everywhere and uh, a weird ventriloquist dummy. Keep hitting up thefader.com for T Cole Rachel’s feature on Glass Candy from F53, presented here for free in just a bit.
