It Came From Brooklyn: High Places
- story Peter Macia
To celebrate its 50th anniversary, venerable Manhattan museum The Guggenheim started a new concert series called It Came From Brooklyn with that borough’s best playing in the Frank Lloyd Wright rotunda. The series started last Friday with The Walkmen, High Places and The Brooklyn Steppers with readings of Walt Whitman by Colson Whitehead in between. Does that mean there are no artists left in Manhattan? Either way, local filmmaker Ray Concepcion, whose music shorts have quickly become our favorite way to watch local shows (other than going to the actual shows), asked to film it for us and here is his video of High Places, the cheery Brooklyn duo we featured in FADER #56.

FADER 56: High Places Feature
- story THE FADER
Before seeing them this Saturday at the East Village Radio festival, read T Cole Rachel’s feature story on Brooklyn, New York’s High Places from FADER Number 56.
FADER TV: Avoiding Disease At The Yard
- story THE FADER
A couple weeks ago Brooklyn fairy godfather Todd P organized a massive mid-summer party at The Yard, a lovely greenspace on the shores of the gonorrheic Gowanus Canal (Oh shit! Gowanorrhea!), with performances by many FADER favorites such as Oneida, High Places, Shy Child, Crystal Antlers, Ponytail, Telepathe, Vivian Girls, Abe Vigoda, Soft Circle, Soiled Mattress and the Springs and Chairlift. We asked Todd if we could bring our video camera, and of course he said yes. We edited the nine or so hours down to several easily-digested minutes with performances by Ponytail, Crystal Antlers, Vivian Girls, Telepathe and Shy Child. Catch the virulent experience only on FADER TV.

NYC: High Places Play Near Lots Of Children
- story THE FADER
When we walked into Stuyvesant Town to see a free High Places show we felt like we had entered some sort of hidden family nature utopia. The scene was like the ideal summer afternoon you only get in the city maybe once or twice a year when the weather is beautiful and no one is pissing each other off because you’re all in a park and there are trees and a big fountain. Also, nothing can suck when the sun is shining and you’re listening to John Lennon and Paul Simon disco remixes. Pocketknife, who spun before High Places, had dads running up to him asking about his Iron and Wine remix before running back to their family picnics.
When High Places came on a whole bunch of little kids ran up to the stage with balloons, organizing themselves in perfect straight lines and then looping around in circles and running away. We lazed around in the grass and relaxed, thinking the whole time about how cool it would have been if they played in our neighborhood when we were five.

NYC: Stuff Is Going On
- story THE FADER
New Yorkers we have some bad news for you, you’re going to have to make some hard decisions tonight because there are some serious shows happening. First of all there is Feist at the Hammerstein Ballroom. Feist does not currently have a new album out, but everyone in the world has a crush on her so you should go. What Feist does have though, is a duet with the Constantines covering the Bee Gees by way of Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers’ “Islands in the Stream.” You can listen to that here. Alternately, if you want to get a little weird you can hit up Southpaw and catch Gang Gang Dance and High Places, two bands that probably should put out another record but have yet to do so. If that doesn’t float your boat you can catch Santogold at the Virgin Megastore in Union Square for FREE in like an hour and a half. Free! It kinda snuck up on us, but Santi’s new album comes out today and it is jamming. We’ve seen her perform a whole bunch in the last couple months and it is consistently great, everyone should go. ALSO: We mentioned The Verve the other day because their performance at Coachella was pretty stunning and loud, and if you couldn’t make it out to the hot desert in the middle of nowhere you can catch The Verve at The WaMu theater at Madison Square Garden in an area that probably has air conditioning but will still be really hot.

FADER TV: BLK JKS at FADER 52 Release Party
- story THE FADER
Last Friday at The Knitting Factory we hosted, along with Bass Ale, a party celebrating the release of our Africa issue. Featuring the sweet sounds of DJs Eddie Stats and DJ/Rupture floating down on us from that weird upper level that looks like those raised indoor tracks that we had to run around in high school, as well as a surprisingly bass heavy set from Brooklyn’s own High Places followed by the US debut of South Africa’s BLK JKS. We did the jam band dance along with everyone else—we see you dude in multi-colored beanie! Check out BLK JKS’ performance of “Lakeside” from our party up above and check out a select few pictures from the event after the jump.

- story THE FADER
Five-O put the chokehold on the Market Hotel last night, so tonight’s show there with FADER favorites High Places, Soft Circle and Lucky Dragons has been moved to the unstoppable Silent Barn. Tell that one kid not to invite the cops this time and bring an extra scarf cuz it’s brick out there.

NYC: Here’s Something That Happened and Will Happen Again (Sort Of)
- story THE FADER
Isn’t it crazy how No Age are huge now? We are into it. If you missed Saturday’s sold out show with Liars YOU ARE IN LUCK because you can read our intern’s review after the jump and after that, get a second chance to see No Age tonight at The Market Hotel along with our pals High Places, Rings, and a weird Telepathe dance thing that we don’t really understand. Awesome city!
BRIEF PS: If you are going to the No Age show tonight and can pick us up a copy of Weirdo Rippers on vinyl and that No Age/Liars 7-inch that would be awesome! We will pay you back! We were just old and chilling up in the balcony and didn’t wander down to the merch table. Holler at us info@thefader.com
