Kingdom played records at our FADER issue 63 release party last night in Brooklyn, and though we don’t specifically remember him playing this particular remix of Kid Sister, it does sound a lot like a lot of the records he did play: lots of low end, hints of tropical drum patterns, plenty of space. It’s a really classy retwerk of what was originally a sort of midtempo raver, which seems like a contradiction but maybe it isn’t.

With summer having officially chunked the deuce, and this weekend promising to be especially gloomy in NYC, the mood around the FADER editorial office hasn’t exactly lent itself to an electric slide session. With Kid Sister giving a play by play of her family reunions and David Banner sounding especially uncle-ish, “Family Reunion” is a chance to latch onto that summertime fly one last time. This doesn’t really sound like the rest of what we’ve heard from the upcoming Dream Date, but it makes for audio sunshine on a dreary Thursday evening.

We’ve heard various forms of this song for a while now, so we didn’t have a lot to say about it at first but then we were like OH WAIT former FADER editor Nick Catchdubs makes TWO appearances in the video. First as a record store clerk and then later on holding up a beeper. Good job Catch! THIS IS WHAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF.

Live: Kanye & The Kids at One Step Beyond

There were already a few pre-show rumors circulating about a Kanye appearance at Flavorpill’s party at the ANMH Planetarium last Friday, so we weren’t surprised to find the other performers at their sartorial best—most notably Kid Sister in a Jetsons-appropriate monochrome swing dress. Kanye, on the other hand jumped on stage for “Pro Nails” in an outfit that was totally anti-spacey. No futuristic specs or planetary moon boots, instead our man shows up looking decidedly vintage in a Starsky and Hutch fur jacket and a pin that might as well read “MJ for president.” Smuggled on stage by his bodyguards, the performance was actually perfect timing (Kid Sister had just rallied all the ladies in the audience for a huge girlie sing-a-long) for a simultaneous meeting of spontaneous enthusiasm (Kanye’s, the crowd’s, Kid Sister’s) that had people climbing up on to every single planet/meteorite/satellite on the museum floor to get closer to the good vibes. All-in-all a pretty stellar way to end a good night, although falling asleep to the soothing sounds of Robert Redford who narrates the Space Show upstairs comes a very close second. NYC: A-Trak, Cool Kids & Kid Sister At The American Museum Of Natural History

So at the American Museum of Natural History they have a planetarium. A planetarium! That alone is worth a visit, but on January 25th, Flavorpill and AMNH are putting on One Step Beyond, a special show with A-Trak, Cool Kids and Kid Sister performing in the planetarium, with free screenings of something called Cosmic Collisions. Is there a better venue for a concert? Maybe a roller coaster but THAT’S IT. Buy tickets here and stay tuned for more coverage.

How To: Make the “Pro Nails” Video

Kid Sister’s new video for breakout single “Pro Nails” debuted on MTV this Monday and quickly spread to every website on the internet, mostly on the strength of the song. But a lot of credit has to go to veteran director Ruben Fleischer who shot the video on a shoestring budget and sold the Fool’s Gold executives on the genius concept of finger dancing. We talked to Ruben at length about the making of the video and got some of Andreas Larsson’s behind-the scenes photos from former FADERer and current Fool’s Gold man Nick Catchdubs, all of which you can see after the jump.
