Freeload: Late Of The Pier, “Heartbeat (Zongamin Remix)”

To be honest, Late of the Pier got klaxoned out of our iPod many months ago even though our very own columnist Sam Richards called them the greatest new rave band ever. It’s a dubious title to hold, for sure, but now we feel silly for not giving these characters more of a chance. The “Heartbeat” 12″ came out around the same time Sam was going on about another song “The Bears Are Coming,” but we just ran across this bandanas Zongamin remix yesterday on Asian Dan. Remember Zongamin? “Bongo Song”? Ring any bells? He has been on Ed Banger and XL in various forms at various stages, but two things have remained constant: he has a super secret special fancy identity aaaaand he makes jams. This remix is a jam and we haven’t used that word in forever.

Dollars To Pounds: Pier Pressure

Late Of The Pier are an amazing band from Castle Donington, a Leicestershire village most famous for its racing circuit and hosting the Monsters Of Rock festival in the ‘80s. They have a new single called “The Bears Are Coming,” a mutant beast of an electro-pop song held together by pipecleaners and chewing gum as it lurches through numerous illogical time changes. It is what we hoped New Rave might be in our wildest dreams. It also comes with a video (above) so Wicker Man weird that when they were filming it, the band freaked out, believing that they had pried opened the door to a parallel dimension which then slammed shut and wouldn’t let them back through.
