Yeasayer, “Ambling Alp” (Memory Tapes Remix) MP3
- story Sam Hockley-Smith
Master of the mid-song breakdown, Memory Tapes lends his melancholy touch to Yeasayer’s already optimistic/bittersweet new single “Ambling Alp,” gives it a little more heft and makes it seem like he’s composing this remix live in his kitchen while his friends hang out and fiddle with radio dials. Good vibes still abound though.

Primary 1, “Foaming” MP3 (+ Weird Tapes RMX)
Primary 1 already had us at “Who’s There”, this past summer’s 3AM weed theme, as reimagined by the bol L-Vis 1990. But how didn’t we know that he made such dreamy pop jangles, almost like Phoenix’s stoned younger bro? The demo version of “Foaming” makes us want to fly a kite in the park and lie on a blanket with our lover in some JAZZ SWEATERS. It drops in limited red vinyl on November 2 on Erol Alkan’s PHANTASY records, so all you bearded dudes better cue the site up in your bloglines and get your trigger fingers psyched for clicking. The remix is a total spa jam, ultimate relaxant, with Weird Tapes sampling an erhu then sliding into mellow rave mode before pulling a total Dam-Funk three minutes in. Hey man, it’s a long song.

Memory Tapes, “Walk Me Home” Halloween Mix MP3
The trajectory that led Memory Tapes to rhythmic and mystical mind music clearly made a stop at the shaded shade of darkwave and brooding quarter-goth. On “Walk Me Home,” a Halloween mix made for Arawa, the art of the creepy toy piano melds faces with the darkest synths, and eerily teases out the creepiness of Italo disco. We think for the duration of October we are going to rechristen Memory Tapes as “Ghost Whisperer.”

Memory Tapes, “Plain Material” MP3
The best part about this Memory Tapes song (from their LP SEEK MAGIC, coppable in extendo form and on vinyl (sample it in an ill minimix here) is that it feels like a cross-section of everything that is awesome about them. Rather than being a dreamy experience where everything’s a bit hazy and indecipherably pretty, this track feels like a collection of visible elements: triumphant choruses, slightly bent guitar, ebullient synth bits and electro beats that pop. It’s still woozy, but much starker than your average Memory Tapes megafest. Perhaps that explains the name, “Plain Material”—a collection of media, maybe?

Fool’s Gold, “Nadine” (Memory Tapes Remix) MP3
- story Matthew Schnipper
There needs to be a collective blog about Memory Tapes written by everyone who blogs. Every time (like every 30 minutes, seriously) dude has a new jam we will all go update it and you can look there and that will be the end of it. Maybe that’s not fair. It’s not like healthcare reform only gets covered in the NY Times and not the Washington Post, or like ESPN doesn’t talk about Lance Armstrong coming in third at the Tour De France because it aired on Versus. Some things have a broad appeal, like rainbows and babies—and Memory Tapes, especially this total dreamwave (totally stole that from FADER editor Julianne Shepherd, sorry) remix of office favorite Fool’s Gold, who are made up of many members of other office favorite Foreign Born. California dandies remixed by Philly dude with a kid and no driver’s license sounds like mountain music. Maybe that will be the new environment people are into for bands—no more beach, just mountains. Nude Beach is a better name than Nude Mountain, though. Maybe not. Stay tuned to thefader.com for our new post: Nude Mountain, “Wild Fire Family Joy Wind” (Memory Tapes Remix) MP3.

Freeload: Memory Tapes, “Bicycle”
- story THE FADER
Memory Tapes is the union of Weird Tapes and Memory Cassette, which was kind of basically the same thing in the first place, it’s just got a married name now. “Bicycle” is the first single and it’s the best thing we’ve heard all day, with siren vocals, crystal-castle synths, and a bounding bassline that fits somewhere within the summer’s futura-disco and goth-revivalist memes, but not trying to be either or anything, really, except awesome. We want to stand at the top of a waterfall and sing along with the echo breaks while growing a unicorn horn, or at the very least listen to this 24 more times in a row. Unnnggghhh it’s so good!
