Freeload: Stag & Dagger Festival MP3 Bonanza

In our newest issue—available on paper or magic PDF paper—we chose Micachu & The Shapes to represent cover icon David Byrne’s tendency to be in the thick of things yet totally out of it. Cool, yet not cool. Micachu is right in the middle of the UK pop scene but is nowhere near anyone else, as you can hear on this cover of Toddla T’s “Backchatter” with Miss Bienek. Micachu will be playing Vice’s gigantic UK festival Stag & Dagger this Thursday at the London venue, and subsequent days will host every other band we’ve liked over the last year or so. So, go buckwild on free songs from a few of our favorites from the lineup and pick up Stag & Dagger tickets here.

RCRD LBL: Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, “Gangster Love”

If you’ve seen F55 cover star and subject of a FADER TV documentary, Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson play live, you know that he frequently sings his voice ragged. Sometimes that makes him sound grizzled and awesome, and other times we can’t hear a single thing that comes out of his mouth. “Gangster Love,” which RCRD LBL has up for download, is one of the better live recordings we’ve heard from dude, melding a fuzzy guitar solo with weary vocals that remind us more than a little bit of Stephen Malkmus.

Live: FADER 55 Party With Estelle, Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson & Special Guests

Last night we headed to Le Poisson Rouge to catch a lineup of epic proportions: Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson warmed up the crowd with a bunch of songs from his OUT RIGHT NOW GO BUY IT self-titled release, as well as a couple new ones we’d never heard before. While we frantically rushed the bar for some Bass Ale between sets, we enjoyed the sweet sounds of forever FADER fam DJ Lindsey and Diddy’s premiere dudes Grind Music aka Sean C & LV. Meanwhile, Estelle presumably spent a bit of time in the green room creating futuristic sunglasses and finding a drummer who could pull off crazy drum fills, and even though we couldn’t see him we knew he was great. Estelle breezed through all the songs we wanted to hear—she did some raps and some singing and unsurprisingly ended with “American Boy”—no Kanye surprise appearance, but it didn’t matter. By the end of the night everyone was dancing and happy, smiling faces all around and looking like the last hour of a wedding reception. After the jump, see more of Dorothy Hong’s photos from the party, and stay tune for exclusive video on FADER TV.

FADER TV: On The Road With Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, Part II

It’s a long road to travel when you’re in a tour van with venetian blinds, a television looping The Last Waltz, and a guy with four names pissing into a milk jug next to you, but that’s the price FADER contributer David Bevan paid for THE ART OF DOCUMENTARY FILM. For five nights, Bevan weathered full blast air conditioning, fast food, and many, many beers.

Welcome back to the second episode of a very special FADER TV presentation. If you’ve been holding your breath since the cliffhanger ending last night when Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson told his bandmate he needed to go to fat camp, then you’re in store for a lot more salacious internet television drama. We don’t want to ruin it, but let us just hint that there are head massages involved. This chapter finds Miles in the trenches of one of the most bizarre tourist attractions on the Vegas strip. And there are two performances to watch this time — one featuring Miles at Beauty Bar and another featuring a large man, with nimble hands and a gray mullet playing alto sax.

FADER TV: On The Road With Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, Part I

It’s a long road to travel when you’re in a tour van with venetian blinds, a television looping The Last Waltz, and a guy with four names pissing into a milk jug next to you, but that’s the price FADER contributer David Bevan paid for THE ART OF DOCUMENTARY FILM. For five nights, Bevan weathered full blast air conditioning, fast food, and many, many beers.

For the first time in the brief yet storied history of FADER TV, we are airing a full-length, four-part documentary featuring FADER 55’s prodigal son, Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson. We’ll be airing a different leg of the tour every day until we conjure the body of Miles Benjamin himself to perform at our issue release party next Monday. Do you know how much bandwidth that takes up on our server? We don’t! But watch as Miles and company roll through the forlorn landscape of Western America, stopping occasionally to play music and throw away empty cans.

In Part I, Miles eats Mexican food and stares at the sun for too long in Los Angeles. Come back tomorrow, same time same place, for Part 2 in Las Vegas.

Video: Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, “Buriedfed”

Judging from this video for “Buriedfed,” Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson’s mammoth folk burner, he does not have very much style, and neither do his friends. Look at the cop in the background, look at the doctor. Why are they all lip synching? The point of a successful costume is to imitate keenly, not belie their model. But that’s reassuring, an uncomfortable Miles with his arm twisted into video performance. Maybe he’s not good at much else aside from being an unfortunately miserable man with a venomous catharsis running through his songs. We want the videos to get worse and the songs to get better, that’s got to be the only acceptable dichotomy.

FADER 55: Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson Cover Story

Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson probably isn’t going to make anyone’s summer brighter, but he is writing songs of regret and disappointment that are there waiting for us when things don’t quite work out, which ironically makes us feel better knowing we have a miserable comrade. You can’t be happy all the time after all, but getting your mug on the cover of The FADER is pretty cool, as is the rest of the subsequent media attention. Read David Bevan’s story from our Summer Music issue after the jump and make sure to catch Miles playing in New York in the next couple weeks if you’re around.

NYC: Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, Wild Yaks, Suckers + The Muslims

We’re still debating whether it’s sad or really exciting that a concert has come along where we actually want to see every act on the bill. We saw Suckers open for Ladyhawk awhile back and only really knew about them because Quinn Walker, who is in the band, had a solo double album where the cover was a dude vomiting rainbows or at least looking like the type of guy who would vomit rainbows. Other than that, you know how we feel about Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson—we put him on the back cover of our Summer Music issue and have been playing his album pretty much every night since we almost overlooked it when it came through the mail chute. And Wild Yaks, what haven’t we said about Wild Yaks? Actually a lot. One of the dudes works at a shoe store and they aren’t annoying about having a saxophone, which should be a selling point on its own. Lucky for them (and us) they also create epic sing-alongs and sound great live. You can listen to some of their live recordings on their MySpace. Finally, The Muslims—who we have only posted about when making lists of all the bands performing at festivals—are also playing. Because they are also good but we haven’t given them much attention, listen to and download “Beside Myself” below. There’s a bunch more for the downloading at their MySpace. Hit up Union Pool tonight to catch all of these bands and check out the pretty ugly but kinda awesome flyer after the jump.

LA: Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson’s Name Echoes Through The Future

It is our understanding that a certain extensively-named Brooklynite will be tearing up Los Angeles’ Echo tonight with White Rabbits and Happy Hollows. How did we come to this understanding you ask? Our name is on the poster! And the BK bittie is none other than Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson who we have grown to love quite a bit lately on the strength of his debut album coming soon to a teary pillow near you. If you don’t know what the hell we’re talking about go here to grab “Woodfriend”, then go to RCRD LBL to get “Buriedfed”—both jams—and then watch the live video above to get ideas and THEN actually go to the show because standing next to other people can be totally great occasionally.

Freeload: Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, “Woodfriend”

Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson. Milesbenjaminanthonyrobinson. It’s a mouthful, but we’ve been getting used to it (calling him M-Bar or just Miles) ever since his eponymous debut arrived in our mailbox a couple weeks back. It’s full of moody stormers like the righteous “Woodfriend”, and his bio is biblical in wasted opportunity and dramatic recovery, which is one of our favorite rock archetypes. So while his album doesn’t come out until July, New Yorkers can probably hear most of it, and witness the dude’s reportedly monumental live show, when young Miles and his Black Boys grace Mercury Lounge tonight and Union Hall tomorrow.
