Ol’ Dirty Bastard, “Shimmy Shimmy Ya (DJ Class Refix)” MP3
We generally refrain from posting refixes/remixes/edits of old-old songs cause it would open Pandora’s box of armchair re-editors and you know, we’re not DJs so like, why? This is an exception because A) It’s by DJ “I’m the Shit” Class, a champ Bmore club DJ who’s got the Midas touch and B) Midway through listening to this the first time we had an “OH SHIT” moment cuz we felt like we were careening through the Matrix with our beloved ODB as our spirit guide. The build-up to 2:05 cuts brain-rattling slabs of noise with surprisingly pared-down Bmore rhythms, then it’s all Mach 5 speeds of particle dissolution that made us do Ally Sheedy’s Breakfast Club twitch dance in the office chair (hope no one saw). Also good lead-up to this other new track by Class, “Party Crackin (Dirty),” which comes with a tasty bit of electro.

Ahhh! The heavens have parted and the sun has rained down droplets of metallic confetti on our once-dreary lives! YES it is a new Mariah Carey song, off her amazingly titled next record Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. We needed the ever-welcoming sound of her glossy high range and spiritual Xanadu to get us through the rest of the day, and we like the comfortingly high-low combo of Mariah, IROC-Z autotune, and Gucci Mane thugging it out on the intro. However this track has sparked a minor office debate: If you are a rapper, and you do a guest spot on a Mariah track, are you cursed? Examples used: Ol Dirty Bastard (RIP-las drogas), Bone Thugs N Harmony (chaos), Jay-Z (he was on “Heartbreaker” in ‘99, arguably his pique), Cam’Ron (froke out for like five years; drove an unfortunately colored sports car), Busta Rhymes (got into a weight loss contest with Nore), Nelly (who?). It’s hard to imagine anything toppling Gucci from atop the swag staff but we warn him to protect his, as they say, neck from the great winds of destiny. Mariah will always prevail!

The last time we had an in-depth look at Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s life, it was the VH1 special about what he was doing after being released from jail. He was subdued and seemed depressed and was working on a still not technically released album. Apparently ODB’s brother has been working on a documentary about his life, interviewing everyone from Ghostface to the most third string of third string Wu affiliates. It remains to be seen how well-made this thing actually is, but any insight into the weirdest dude in rap is always welcome.
