Pocketknife, “Get Around To It (Ray Burst Remix)” (Arthur Russell Cover) MP3

Electric Minds‘ tribute album to Arthur Russell features a cover of his song “Get Around to It” as re-imagined by Brooklyn-based DJ, Pocketknife. It is decidedly more disco than the original, but Joe Worricker’s vocal tones are almost tantamount to Russell’s, feeling like an update Russell would have given himself. Rough Trade’s Ray Burst continues the transformation by remixing the cover into whirl-y millennial disco that is fun on its own, but finds itself most attuned with the original song’s theme of desperation by obscuring Worricker’s vocals. They are muted into indecipherable parts of the beat that loom over the track, dissenting from Burst’s sanguine interpretation. A noted revisionist with a propensity for abandoning projects entirely, Russell would have appreciated all of the tinkering.

Freeload: Yeasayer, “Sunrise” (Pocketknife’s Rise and $hine Remix)

We just got our remix-loving hands on Pocketknife’s clap-heavy disco work-over of Yeasayer’s perennial office favorite “Sunrise.” The song comes as a part of Canyon Dancing, the sequel to Flagrant Fowl’s (aka Pocketknife and Cousin Cole) series of folk edits Tambourine Dream and also features the duo remixing Battles, Liars and a bunch more. If you’re into the “Sunrise” remix, listen to The Let Out on East Village Radio this friday to catch the duo playing a bunch of new and unreleased music from (and not from) the EP.

NYC: High Places Play Near Lots Of Children

When we walked into Stuyvesant Town to see a free High Places show we felt like we had entered some sort of hidden family nature utopia. The scene was like the ideal summer afternoon you only get in the city maybe once or twice a year when the weather is beautiful and no one is pissing each other off because you’re all in a park and there are trees and a big fountain. Also, nothing can suck when the sun is shining and you’re listening to John Lennon and Paul Simon disco remixes. Pocketknife, who spun before High Places, had dads running up to him asking about his Iron and Wine remix before running back to their family picnics.

When High Places came on a whole bunch of little kids ran up to the stage with balloons, organizing themselves in perfect straight lines and then looping around in circles and running away. We lazed around in the grass and relaxed, thinking the whole time about how cool it would have been if they played in our neighborhood when we were five.

Freeload: Pocketknife’s FADER Holiday Mix, Live From The Peppermint Palace

Not that long ago we kinda had a major freak out over Pocketknife’s remix of Vince Guaraldi’s “Linus & Lucy” from the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack. So we got on the horn with him—full of holiday cheer—and asked if he would make a holiday mix packed with CERTIFIED JAMS for us. He sent us this over the weekend, and we’ve been waiting for a good time to post it—considering everyone is winding down at work at this point and we have all gained like 30 pounds from eggnog already, it seems now is the time. So, for your enjoyment, stream and then download the mix below and check the tracklist after the jump.
