Q+A: Tony Blankets of Restless People on Family Edition
- story Sam Hockley-Smith
In one form or another, most of the members of Restless People have been in our magazine. Whether it’s when we wrote about Professor Murderin F41, Michael Bell-Smith in F61, The Brothers production duo in F53, or one of the million and a half times we’ve covered Tanlines on this very site. Now the dudes have a site/free online-only record label/collective called Family Edition. Thus far they’ve released music from Restless People, mysterious lo-fi weirdos Newborn Huskies, an upcoming series of original ringtones and also a YouTube video of a dude at NASA trying to give another guy a high five. After the jump read our conversation with Restless People member Tony Blankets about the label, music and what may or may not be an actual story behind a certain Rolling Stones album.

Restless People Soundtrack Your Next Birthday or Wedding
- story Sam Hockley-Smith
Please do not take it as a diss when we say that Professor Murder had the potential to be an incredible wedding band. Now in a new iteration known as Restless People, they’ve put a bunch of new demos up on their MySpace page, and hanging out over there for ten minutes is like going to a kid’s incredible and vaguely soca-themed birthday party. So maybe they’re now an awesome band that’s appropriate for kids and adults? Crossing borders left and right! This is Machel Montano-level party music, as you can tell by the real life photo of our office having an intense party while listening to Restless People.

Audio: Restless People, “Victimless Crime”
- story THE FADER
In a brief IM conversation about whether or not 1. “Victimless Crime” sounds at all like Operation Ivy and 2. whether or not it is appropriate to say that on TheFADER.com, it was decided that Restless People have started a genre called “new teenager”—because old teenager was Operation Ivy and ska punk (Sidebar: Did you also just rediscover how amazing a song “Friday Night, Saturday Morning” is?) is not what today’s teens are interested in, it’s too naive. Restless People, a new project comprising all of Tanlines and some of Professor Murder, takes the spirit and complicates it. Check the vocal tone and rhythm, the way the shaker sounds like a stroked guitar. But they’ve got an electronic fuss and steady backbeat, too, a fruitful, solid merging of the two groups from which they came. And keeping it futuristic, they’re releasing the music via a new online venture, Family Edition.

Flyer Alert: Get Meta!
- story THE FADER
You’d expect any advertising for a free show featuring art-damaged superfriends (and FADER faves) Professor Murder, Free Blood, Pink Skull and Kingdom to be appropriately random. But this one goes the extra mile, mashing a Mad Magazine jack from Al Jaffe with an amazing pride week colorway and a bad record store joke, minus the joke. If the show is half as stoned as this flyer, we’re in for a fun Friday.

Freeload: Telepathe, “Chromes On It (Tan Lines RMX)”
- story THE FADER
We are 100% FOR musicians we love coming together as one. So obviously we were pumped when FADER fam Will aka DJ Caps IM’d us this banging Telepathe song remixed by Tan Lines, aka Eric from Brothers/Storm & Stress and Jesse from Professor Murder! What is even more synergistic is that in the just-released FADER 53, we featured Telepathe as… a feature, and Brothers as a Beat Construction. (Download Brothers’ EXCLUSIVE FADER mix here!) We also really like Professor Murder. We featured them in FADER 41. We wish they would drop an album soon. FOUR (OR FIVE) BECOME ONE. This is beautiful.

Freeload: Professor Murder, “Flex-it Formula”
- story THE FADER
RCRD LBL is like Hebrew because it doesn’t have vowels. They took that shalom spirit to heart and have begun giving away oodles of goodies, this big bumping boogie of a Professor Murder track included. It could be worse/ Don’t judge me, he sounds so sad. But listening, we feel so good. Professor Murder is a conundrum, hear for yourself.
