Freeload: Project Pat Back 2 Da Hood Mixtape

When Project Pat came through Schnipper’s house a few weeks ago, he talked about the modern importance of the mixtape, of YouTube, of the embrace of technology. He freely communicated on both a cell phone and a BlackBerry. Ambidextrous dude that he is, just ahead of his new album, Real Recognize Real, Pat has dropped a new tape, Back 2 Da Hood. He’s talking about a lot of things here, but we have to think track 11, “Get My Pay Up,” is the most true-to-heart Pat track, as he was fully focused on fluffing his stacks (pause). Oh also, is track 8, “What I’m Cockin” a typo? Hmm.

Never, in the history of area specific posse cuts, has there been a more inaccurate chorus than that of 8Ball and the Memphis All-Stars’ “This Ain’t.” Aside from a steady stream of All-Star freestyles (we see you Starlito!), Tennessee’s been way too quiet, making a song like “This Ain’t” exactly what we want. Ball and JG lead a pack of Memphis grizzlies with too many quotables to quote, but check for the steel drum synth chop of the opening riff from Super Mario Brothers.

FADER TV: Project Pat at Schnipper’s House

Because apparently I have no idea how to be a regular person, I, Matthew Schnipper, thought it might be a nice idea to ask Project Pat to come to my apartment and hang out and listen to records and, uh, do some other stuff. Because he does not listen closely to his publicists, Pat agreed. Turns out he hasn’t done other stuff in seven years because of jail and parole. But he hung out and had some Chinese food and we talked about southern Jews, Alaska, being on television, mixtapes and his new album, Real Recognize Real, out later this month on Asylum.

Freeload: Three 6 Mafia f. Project Pat & Santogold, “Shuv It”

Some bloggers are already postulating that the recent trend of rappers rapping over MIA and Santogold samples could be “one of the lowest points in hip hop.” To us, it seems more like the recent trend of bloggers complaining about what rappers like Jay-Z and T.I. are allowed to do sounds a lot like when pre-bloggers complained about what rappers like Jay-Z and T.I. were allowed to do in 1999. For reference, read this sad tale about Def Jux. Is it really that big a deal? PS- We still fuck with hip-house and snap when appropriate.

Freeload: Project Pat f. OJ Da Juiceman, “Keep It Hood”

During the Three 6 Mafia show “Adventures In Hollyhood,” Project Pat always seemed to stay just far enough out of the camera shots and promo pictures that his musical credibility never took the hit that the group’s did. He must have foreseen how Juicy J trying to get a date with Kristin Cavallari could slightly undermine his netherworld d-boy superhero persona. Pat was also wise enough to know that he still had shit like this in the stash.
