Freeload: Roots Manuva, Slime and Reason Samples Mix

Roots Manuva’s album Slime and Reason is coming out in the US at the end of September, but because we love to ply you guys with incentives to actually buy things, here is a 15-minute sampler of the album mixed by Roots’ longtime tour DJ MK. On it you can hear how the album is a little bit weirder than we’ve come to expect from the UK hip hop vet, partially due to the younger and more radical choices for production. Bassline kid Toddla T has a handful of tracks including early favorite “Buff Nuff” and Metronomy handle “Let the Spirit,” which we’ve got the video for above as well.

Video: Roots Manuva, “Again And Again”

You’d have a hard time explaining the rules of cricket to us (nice outfits), but we are still enjoying this new Roots Manuva video which revolves entirely around the game, his trashtalking of old ladies and a sequence in which he passes out for no reason and dreams of drinking a mysterious, and apparently vile, yellow liquid. All very confusing stuff, but still it’s easier on the soul than the video for first single “Buff Nuff”.

Can we tell you that it took a fair amount of archive bedeviling to find the issue in which we talked to Roots Manuva? We just did. We gave him a Gen F in issue 30 and then It turns out we put him in a UK Hip-Hop round-up in FADER #6, and the sum total of words in his answers to our questions was forty-nine, and that’s counting the really small words! So we’re happy to report once again that Roots is much more loquacious on the mic than he is in print, as evidenced in this kind of revolting new video for “Buff Nuff,” produced by recently upped UK kid Toddla T, from his new album Slime & Reason coming on August 25th.
