Video: Round Table Knights, “Calypso”

Jai alai into flamingos! Sports that involve round pitching instruments and soft pink birds! Serenity now! This video, for “Calypso” from Round Table Knights‘ upcoming EP, is a steel drum house bubble jam from our Swiss friends. If you follow TheFADER.com, you’ll know we’re fans of Round Table Knights’ seasonal mixes. “Calypso” upends that weather-based diligence, as it is strictly warm weather with the Caribbean percussion—look, they called the song “Calypso”—but they’re releasing it during the winter. But we’re glad to see a really heavy original production from our friends who are using up there DJing, hawking others’ wares. We’re counting down the days until they remix Tanlines/Tanlines remix them. The great steel drum wars of 2010 begin here.

Round Table Knights Winter 2010 Mix

The best thing about the seasonal scheduling of Round Table Knights‘ mixes is that you forget that they exist by the time the next one is ready for delivery. They also tend to come right at the nadir of your quarterly doldrums and are always assembled from the most random spirit-lifting house and disco you’ve never heard. As a bonus, the Winter 2010 mix begins with either a child, Björk or other Scandinavian (is Iceland Scandivia?) talking about living positively. Let’s do that! Listen below, check the tracklist after the jump and watch out for Round Table Knights’ Calypso EP on February 15th, whch you can sample in the video above.

Round Table Knights Autumn 09 Mix

You know how when you’re watching a Wes Anderson movie and an establishing shot appears onscreen of some neighborhood in fall and one of Vince Guaraldi’s Peanuts songs comes on and you say to yourself, Oh man, this movie is totally about me and everything I like. It’s not about you. That is a trick. Everyone watched Charlie Brown drag a dead Christmas tree around or get pwned by some random on Halloween a thousand times growing up and identified with getting kicked around or doing stuff other people clowned on. So when that music comes on you subconsciously identify it with something you remember fondly from childhood. Watch that same scene with Rusted Root playing and see how you feel about it. Oddly enough, our parents listened to a lot of disco and Prokofiev at the same time growing up, which might explain why they’re not together anymore and why that Wes Anderson business doesn’t work on us, but also why the latest edition of Round Table Knights’ season mixes made us want to play Candyland real bad. Download the mix below, check the tracklist after the jump and recommend a good therapist in the comments.

Round Table Knights, Summer Mix MP3

Our closest Swiss buds outside of the half-Swiss buds on staff, Round Table Knights, just released a summer mix, the sixth seasonal compilation of theirs we’ve posted and MAN IS IT DISAPPOINTING. Just kidding, guys! It’s great, as usual—filled with esoteric minimal house remixes and obscure European club antiquities. Listening to these mixes is like going through your distant uncle’s garage and finding a box marked “Oh yeah, I was Indiana Jones for a few years in grad school + Xmas ornaments,” only fewer skulls and shiny balls. Tracklist after the jump.

Freeload: Round Table Knights Spring Mix

The fine Swiss fellows of Round Table Knights recently spent some quality time with the FADER staff in New York, where we bumped into them at a Here We Go Magic show, they played a set on our weekly radio show The Let Out and then helped us fuck up some Korean food and barbecue over the next couple of days. We, in turn, plan on eating melted cheese and drinking sparkling wine with them in Bern just as soon as someone buys our collection of Garfield etchings on eBay. Until then we have this brand new spring mix by RTK to tide us over and get us psyched on being able to actually walk around outside without having to wear three pairs of pants and a sleeping bag around our necks. Stream and download below and get the tracklist after the jump.

Audio: East Village Radio 4/10

Last Friday on The Let Out (our weekly show on East Village Radio, made possible by Dewars), we had a guest DJ double feature from Round Table Knights and Kingdom. Many dudes crowded into a booth, and the music was so amazing that we’re not going to even suggest you should listen to it. You should just do it. Seriously. Listen live to East Village Radio this and every following Friday from 6-8pm EST, stream last week’s audio podcast below and check out the tracklist after the jump.

The Let Out: Kingdom Come(s Through and Plays Music With Us For An Hour)

This week on The Let Out, our weekly East Village Radio show (made possible by Dewars), Kingdom, the man behind about a million awesome songs (some of which you can hear on this mix) is going to stop by and blow our minds, and your mind as well if you listen live to The Let Out this and every Friday on eastvillageradio.com from 6-8pm EST.

EDIT: In addition to Kingdom’s 7-8 set, the Round Table Knights (whose seasonal mixes you may have downloaded from this very blog) will be spinning the jammiest of jams directly from our studio to your computer speakers.

We’ve noticed Round Table Knights release these mixes not at the beginning of seasons but right square in the middle, right when you need some encouragement to get you through the second half. We’ve come to appreciate this, especially when said season consists of permanent wrist-snapping black ice and interminable hours indoors. We will play this winter mix to stave off cabin fever until March, when we’ll hopefully see the boys in Austin for SXSW. Check the tracklist after the jump.

Along with offering a sacrificial intern to the Moon and Sun, it has become a ritual around here to jam the Round Table Knights‘ mixes at the turn of every season. We started with spring, then summer, and now they ring in autumn with maybe our favorite one yet. It’s got High Places, “Secousse,” Mujava, Holy Ghost!—a bunch of stuff we already love—and stuff like Larytta, Discodeine and Department of Eagles that we are almost embarrassed to not have already talked about. Oh well, that’s we mix things are good. Check the tracklist after the jump and if you’re in Switzerland make sure to go see Round Table Knights at any of their many upcoming shows.

We found their Spring Mix on our own, but Bern’s favorite DJing sons (only DJing sons?) the Round Table Knights sent us the summer edition direct. Compared with the Spring Mix’s clubbier selections, this is super mellow, but it has been a crazy summer so far so this is welcome. “It’s just some songs we love to listen to while sitting on the balcony and enjoy the sun,” says RTK’s DJ Questionmark, and though we are currently not doing that, we are definitely appreciating this while we soak in the flourescents.
