The FADER Issue 64 Free Download
- story THE FADER
With domestic issues weighing so heavily on every American’s mind these days, it felt appropriate to focus our sixth annual photo issue inward. We started by selecting two cover stories that represent seemingly opposing factions of this country—the values of small town America via Eau Claire, Wisconsin’s Bon Iver and the hard grind of big city life through South Central Los Angeles’ Dam-Funk—and found more common ground between them than most talking heads and politicians would care to know. For the feature photo story, Peter van Agtmael’s plaintive portraits of widespread citizens and Victoria Sambunaris’ landscapes of geological sites along Interstate 80 create a visual dialogue between man and land and will hopefully leave you asking questions rather than giving answers. And because the future prosperity of the US will depend on the dreams of its newest residents as it always has, we focused our fashion story on first generation Americans and new emigres living in New York’s five boroughs. Not to mention our regular selection of Gen F profiles, including Kris Kristofferson, The XX, Neon Indian, Kurt Vile, Kyle Hall and Warpaint, plus interviews with RZA, Janka Nabay, Andrew Weatherall and tons more. So feel free (because it is literally free) to check it all out, and if you make TheFADER.com your homepage you won’t miss our treasure trove of extras and outtakes from above and beyond the issue.

Yo, someone just informed us that RZA is really into martial arts, and he has turned that interest into a music career! For real, we remember the days when Kung Fu Theater was on UHF on Sundays, so there is nothing more interesting than one of our all-time favorite producers making music for a movie called Afro Samurai: The Resurrection, especially when that music is some of his grimiest in recent years like this megajoint with the gods. For the full media experience, hit mute on the trailer video above and listen to Ghostface spit while dudes get their heads chopped off. Afro Samurai the series debuts on January 25th on Spike TV, the movie is out on February 3rd, and RZA’s soundtrack stabs your brain on January 27th.

Why spend money clearing a Billie Holiday sample when you can get the hockey mom on your street to kick the chorus? This is probably our favorite RZA beat in a million years, and our favorite low budget/high fashion Wu-affiliated video since the last Bob Digi video, but seriously, did Tekitha go back to school or something?

GZA’s been eating steadily as of late, thanks to an unexpected (though in no way undeserved) bubble of interest in his 1995 opus Liquid Swords. He’s been trekking around performing that album in its entirety so much, we almost forgot dude released a new record yesterday! Which is a shame, because tucked away at the end of Pro Tools is this slice of vintage breakbeat Wu, where GZA and RZA spit back and forth over Gary Numan’s “Movies” about duh, movies (at least on the second verse, the first half is pretty…abstract). Unfortunately it doesn’t follow in the footsteps of “Labels” by using titles as lyrics – there’s no “Norbit had Jungle Fever for The Believer” type rhyme action to be found, but “craft service got nervous” might be in the running for couplet of the year.

Lately most members of the Wu have been aging pretty gracefully—there hasn’t been any attempt to recapture their original sound, so instead they just repurpose the basic idea of Wu-Tang into a more grownup package. RZA’s “You Can’t Stop Me Now,” is a perfect example of this—greasy guitar and RZA creeping around on roofs, still overly verbose and a little awkward and namedropping samplers without sounding nerdy. Considering 1993 already happened and won’t happen again, this is a pretty good direction to go in.

Remember when RZA first became Bobby Digital and said that he actually was fighting crime in a Bobby Digital costume? Remember when he made and then never released a Bobby Digital film? Remember when MF Doom used this beat in 2003 on his King Geedorah album? All of these have something in common, and it is that they are weird ideas that are also awesome. Yeah Doom might be reusing this beat, but it’s a good one, and yeah RZA actually fighting crime is probably really dangerous and also may never have happened, but it’s cool to think about. This trailer for RZA’s upcoming video touches on all of these things, and even though the idea of a trailer for a music video is dubious, we’re still excited.
