Gabriel Heatwave’s UK Funky Bashment Mixtape MP3

It was only a matter of time before the hottest dance music in London, with its African influences and syncopated jangling, began drifting into reggae territory. On Gabriel Heatwave’s mix for XLR8R, he shows exactly how made for each other UK funky house and bashment are with a vast selection of Jamaica’s hottest deejays (i.e. our girl Natalie Storm, above) and Britain’s most solid emerging funky scions. Not to go heavy on the “heatwave” references but this mix is extra hot fire, let’s face it, you always wanted to hear “Ramping Shop” interpolated with DJ Shredda’s garage-esque synth stabs. Tracklist after the jump.

FADER TV: Sean Paul at Federation Sound 10th Anniversary Party

We attended the Sunglass Hut/Business Class-hosted Federation Sound 10th birthday last night at Santos Party House and to be totally honest it is really difficult to form complete sentences right now. Santos was jammed and there was much gully creeping and sweeping (and drinking). Chino, Laden, 77Klash, Jahdan and TNT all performed—TNT, we will wife you anytime btw—but everyone was there to see Sean Paul. He, of course, did not disappoint, and we’ve got a little FADER TV footage to prove it with SEANUH PAL doing “Gimme the Light,” “Like Glue” and “Get Busy” in the same order they appeared on his classic Dutty Rock album. This happened around three or four in the morning and we had to fight with some crazy Japanese girls to get this angle so we really hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Live: Sean Paul at Club Element

On the eve of Martin Luther King Jr’s observed birthday we braced ourselves for the already-in-progress mini blizzard and headed to the Lower East Side for some whiskey and dancehall. Strange bedfellows, we’ll admit, but you do what you have to do to see “Watch Dem Roll” live. “Sean Paul and Friends” were set to play at Club Element (hosted by Upscale Crowd promotions) and we anticipated some crazy cameos in addition to jammers spun by Irie Jam Radio’s
DJ Calli B and Young Chow. While we sheepishly attempted to “sweep” and “nuh linga” and swayed to dancehall classics new and old (and some 90’s hip hop thrown in for good measure) the biggest surprise of the night was not that SP invited Fader 55 cover star Estelle on stage at 3:15 to sing their luster’s rock duet, “Come Over,” but to hear Mr. Cee drop the McDonald’s McNugget R&B jingle to intro his set and hearing the crowd’s appeased roar. Or maybe that was our stomachs. Either way, Element also hosts a dancehall party every Friday, offering “reggae-robics and soca-cise.”

Freeload: Sean Paul, “Highest Grade”

Apparently, Sean Paul and 200 yahoos were arrested in Stockholm, Sweden last week at the Uppsala Reggae Festival for alleged marijuana possession, which is weird because we’re pretty sure Sean doesn’t smoke weed. Anyhow, good luck to him, and here’s his new song “Highest Grade” about smoking really good weed.

Don Corleon, where are you taking us? Who are all these people? Why are they dressed like this? Wait, are those…glow sticks?!?

Ghetto Palms: Sean Paul Returns!

Every week resident FADER selector Eddie STATS runs through dancehall riddims and other artifacts from the ghetto archipelago.

Actually I just figured “New Sean Paul Tunes” was the dancehall equivalent of putting “Free Beer” on your spam email, this column is actually going to be an infomercial for erectile dysfunction treatments. PSYCHE. Sean Paul is indeed back on the juggling case with a ferocity, voicing a mess of new chune after an extended absence. He’s not the type of contentious clash artist to even claim the “king of dancehall” title but having broken every record imaginable for a reggae artist he is definitely the high priest or maybe the viceroy of this shit; at this point whatever he does is an all-important sigil for anybody who cares about the direction of dancehall as an industry and an artform. In my HO he also happens to be one of the most consistently nice deejays to ever dub a plate, clash credentials or no. Lucky for me and dancehall, rumors of a new album in the works for later this year are circulating along with a barrage of new 45s and guest verses . What follows is basically a heap of recent things that I cut together in no particular order, ranging from a few months to a few minutes young.

Freeload: Sean Paul, “Grip” (Sand Fly Riddim)

This is going to sound really messed up, but we had to tell Mom yesterday that Sean Paul’s voice had officially surpassed hers in its ability to make us feel good about the world. We were like Happy Mother’s Day! You’ve been replaced! And then she took our flowers and shoved them down the garbage disposal. But there’s just something about the multi-tracked Paul vocal that sets off a chemical reaction in our brains. So it’s not like we’ve consciously chosen Sean Paul over our mothers, but well yeah, it’s kind of a wrap. Sorry, Ma!

ELLA ELLA ELLA SEIZA PAUL

According to the NY Daily News, Stacey Gayle’s epilepsy was triggered by Sean Paul, Rihanna and Sean Kingston, specifically “Temperature,” “Umbrella,” and “Beautiful Girls.” So, in order to go on with a life that had been totally disrupted by ambiguously Caribbean popstars, Ms Gayle HAD PART OF HER BRAIN REMOVED on October 3rd. She has since recovered and listens to Sean-uh Paul seizure-free, but her armpits get real sweaty now.
