J. Futuristic f. Young Jeezy & Shawty Lo, “1st Name, Last Name” Remix MP3
- story Felipe Delerme
We spoke briefly about J. Futuristic, (and his affinity for barbecued ribs) in our Young Dro feature from FADER 62. Back then he was still going by J. Money, which he’s since changed to J. Futuristic because, “too many people were calling themself J. Money.” Uh, yeah. Either way, “1st Name, Last Name” was kind of a jam this past spring and accordingly, Jeezy and Shawty Lo have jumped on, certifying the young trapper in the same way everyone else did for Shawty Lo back when “Dey Know” dropped, proving once again that Atlanta is really just a huge musical village. Watch the Mr. Boomtown-directed video for the original “1st Name, Last Name” above and grab the remix below.

Shawty Lo f. Ludacris, Gucci Mane & The-Dream, “Atlanta, GA” MP3
- story Peter Macia
Atlanta’s had so many solid dedications (+ another million) to its awesomeness that seeing this lineup and having it not be as good as it should’ve been is even tougher than it would’ve been for say, New York. Big Apple rappers make bad songs about this town all the time, but these guys ostensibly represent the top echelon of Atlantans not in the Dungeon Family or locked up and not one of them really shows up. Even Gucci and The-Dream, who lately can fart on the mic and get the club poppin’, contribute throwaways. Oh well, at least they still have some of the finest gentelmen’s clubs in the country.

Video: Soulja Boy f. Gucci Mane and Shawty Lo, “Gucci Bandana”
- story THE FADER
Pretty much since “Gucci Bandana” came out, Soulja Boy has been making a lot of noise about how hot the video was going to be and how it was going to be #1 on 106 and Park like right away. Now the video is here, and we wouldn’t exactly call it MAN’S GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT or anything, but can you really be mad at Soulja Boy hanging his chain out of a convertible window coupled with the first post-jail legit music video appearance from Gucci? Plus how can anyone anywhere in the world deny this song?
Deconstructing Beezy, Part Two: “Gucci Bandana” Controversy
- story THE FADER
Since the release of Soulja Boy’s latest album ¡SouljaBoyTellem on December 18th, we have been grappling with it on nearly every level imaginable: production, rapping, singing, videos, art direction, etc. This series, Deconstructing Beezy, is our attempt to come to terms and hopefully peacefully coexist with 2009’s most perplexing album.
Part Two
We’d intended to move on to another aspect of ¡SouljaBoyTellem with Part Two, but the fervor over an apparent mistake in Part One necessitated sticking with “Gucci Bandana.”
It seems we made the mistake not of mishearing a lyric but trying to save time by posting a stream of what appears to be a corrected version of the song that appears on the promotional copy that inspired the post. We’re now posting both side by side, and to our ears, it still sounds like “goodbye” on the promo. Does that make us right? Probably. Does it make the whole thing more interesting. Definitely. Did someone at Collipark Music/Interscope actually take the time to ¡SouljaBoyTellem and suggest the correction? If so, what version appears on the retail? Are we totally deaf? If so, does anyone have a good ear doctor?

Deconstructing Beezy, Part One: Is Soulja Boy Serious on “Gucci Bandana”?
- story THE FADER
Since the release of Soulja Boy’s latest album ¡SouljaBoyTellem on December 18th, we have been grappling with it on nearly every level imaginable: production, rapping, singing, videos, art direction, etc. This series, Deconstructing Beezy, is our attempt to come to terms and hopefully peacefully coexist with 2009’s most perplexing album.
Part One
At 0:55 of “Gucci Bandana” with Gucci Mane and Shawty Lo, Soulja Boy raps the following couplet: “And ain’t this beat tight?/My chain say ‘Hello,’ my watch say ‘Goodbye.’” Is he serious? If he isn’t… kudos, Beezy, kudos.

Freeload: Capone-N-Noreaga, “Hug The Block” + “Money”
- story THE FADER
It’s not a 100-degree spring day without a little NORE, so, as if summoned by the vengeful gods who’ve turned New York into boiling cauldron the last few days (We are wearing cut-offs in the office!), Victor Santiago appears with his partner Capone to drop a couple songs for all the dudes and ladies sweating through perfectly reasonable early-June outfits. “Hug the Block” is bootleg Al B. Sure! and “Money” is a big Southern jawn with Shawty Lo on the hook produced by Dallas duo Play-N-Skillz.

Freeload: New DG Yola “Return Of Da Great” + Shawty Lo Remix
- story THE FADER
We recently heard rumors that Yola might not have a record deal anymore. That would be a shame if it’s true, but it’s not like we’re all that tied to release dates on here anyway. Yola just put up a couple new songs on his MySpace, one of which we were able to procure for you to keep—the other one you’ll just have to deal with a stream. The first is the Arkatech Beatz remix of Shawty Lo, sounding more like Mr. Hanky by the minute, with a clean-up Yola verse, but the second is all Yola and is actually the jawn. We will do our best to get it for you, but don’t sleep, because MySpace song samples ARE THE BEST.

Live: Hot 97 Summer Jam 2008, Giants Stadium, New Jersey
- story THE FADER
Summer Jam has built its entire rep on ridiculous moments, i.e. G-Unit starting a riot with chair-throwing in a downpour and Mobb Deep and Jay-Z getting into beef zone when Jay projected a flick of Prodigy extra dick-riding Michael Jackson’s outfit, glove and all. But the Summer Jam stage has never seen anything as subversive, uncomfortable and totally bizarre as Lil Wayne’s 20 minute set, apparently blasted on his own summer Js and a total amazing/scary rock star set, as in “DEAR GIANTS STADIUM, FOLLOW ME INTO MY K-HOLE, XOXO WEEZY.”

Freeload: Trae, “Watch Ova Momma” & “Wrist Out Tha Window”
- story THE FADER
Every so often Trae (who is apparently no longer on Rap-A-Lot) drops some new songs on us and they are always great, yet dude still gets no love from the general public. Can you still call someone underrated if everyone thinks they are underrated? Trae is one of those dudes that has total longevity and we will be listening to him even when we are 80 and complaining about the state of rap. Seriously though, he does wistful tracks like “Watch Ova Momma” better than any other rapper except maybe Scarface, but since Scarface is perpetually about to retire, Trae might be the next gravelly-voiced dude to take the crown. “Wrist Out Tha Window,” is technically a Rich Boy song with Shawty Lo (sounding especially like a tiny Young Jeezy) and “Watch Ova Momma” is all internet, but either way, Trae is now touring, so check him out if he comes through your area.

- story THE FADER
“Dey Know” has been a FADER office anthem, so we always make sure to check for the next Shawty Lo song. And here’s another one! Not as anthemic as “Dey Know,” but still good. Remember when people were complaining about snap music all the time? What was the deal with that? Snap music was awesome, and we kinda hope that Shawty and Fabo and the rest of D4L come back to it. If not, we’re fine with this.
