Simian Mobile Disco f. Beth Ditto, “Cruel Intentions (Joker Remix)” MP3

The consensus on Simian Mobile Disco’s newest album Temporary Pleasure is that it’s not as earth-crumbling as their debut, Attack Decay Sustain Release, but some of the criticism seems to be aimed at the fact that SMD recruited some all-star guest vocalists instead of relative unknowns like Ninja and Char Johnson as they had before. Considering the quote/unquote all-stars are Alexis Taylor, Chris Keating, Telepathe, Young Fathers, Gruff Rhys, Jamie Lidell and Beth Ditto, and we’re pretty sure 99% of the human race doesn’t know who at least 75% of those people are, that doesn’t seem like that valid a criticism. A better one would be that SMD made a mostly mid-tempo, one-note pop album instead of another crazy disco one. But there are still some jams, including “Cruel Intentions” with The Gossip’s Ditto, a smoldering open-ended request for “good times.” One of our young favorites, Bristol’s Joker, got license to turn it into an, uhmm, electro/house/dubstep/purple/strip club/early/late/anthem? Whatever it is, Joker can do no wrong right now, and he should get as many famous people as possible on his debut album, in the works right now.

Sweltering With Simian Mobile Disco

On the hottest day of the entire history of the whole world, we sat in Tompkins Square Park in New York City with Simian Mobile Disco. They were in the US for three brief appearances, one in Denver, one in Chicago at Lollapalooza and one at Brooklyn’s waterfront. Just before they got on a plane over the Atlantic, we spoke with them about their new album, Temporary Pleasure (now pushed back to September), its ample guest vocalists and its Kylie Minogue vibes (which is, we promise, a good thing). Surprisingly, they also sung New York’s dancefloor praises, though it seems we can’t hold much of a candle to UK gay clubs.

Over the weekend we were trying to figure out if Sesame Street was still relevant to the kids, and basically decided that we had no idea because we have no kids. Regardless, this Simian Mobile Disco video seems like it would be right at home in the middle of an episode, except replace the James Joyce, Damien Hirst and grape Kool-Aid-filled swimming pool with the band just singing the alphabet. Actually the Kool-Aid thing can stay.

Freeload: Deerhunter, “Octet (Simian Mobile Disco Remix)”

This came to us as “SMD vs Deerhunter,” and it took us a minute to figure out exactly what Deerhunter song Simian Mobile Disco had edited, especially since we assumed it was something from the recently, officially released Microcastle/Weird Era Cont.. Turns out it is actually an edit of “Octet” from Cryptograms, which Tim Sweeney played on Beats In Space way back in April, but it’s still totally unclear the impetus behind its arrival. Coincidentally, both Bradford Cox and SMD were feature stories in FADER Number 49, so we used our magic wand to make them appear at the same picnic in the photo above. Looks Fun.

Freeload: Simian Mobile Disco, “Hustler (Joakim Remix)”

Fans (like us) of Simian Mobile Disco’s Attack Decay Sustain Release from last year will have two opportunities to extend the love affair in the coming weeks because the dudes not only have an excellent installment of the FabricLive series on the way on August 4th but their very own remix album Sample and Hold coming July 28th. The latter has eleven ADSR songs tweaked by the likes of Cosmo Vitelli, Simon Baker, Invisible Conga People and more, but we’re especially into this Joakim redo of “Hustler” because it sounds like Bambaataa and Nile Rodgers having a jam session.

Live: Simian Mobile Disco At The Planetarium

On our list of awesome things paired together, Flavorpill’s One Step Beyond rave at the planetarium ranks pretty high because dudes, it was crazy dark in there and Simian Mobile Disco were DJing and there were pieces of the moon and asteroids around and security guards were guarding them which is so real. After we got tired of dancing we went up the windy path and read about planets and were like the universe is crazy and we were right, because it is.

Simian Mobile Widget Disco

Interscope Records apparently saw fit to drop Simian Mobile Disco recently, leaving the band unattended in the US market, where not many people like music or buying music. We feel for dudes, so we’re putting up a widget they sent us (after the jump) which features an exclusive mix, videos, tour dates and more. One of those dates will be on March 28th when they play the One Step Beyond series at the American Natural History Museum in New York, so mark your calendars.
