NYC: Freeway & Styles P at the Rock the Block Festival

If you just came to Earth and didn’t know what the deal was with music and we then took you to a Freeway show you would be like, “Why is this guy yelling at me? Is he about to cry? I guess it doesn’t matter because this is awesome.” And if we took you to a Styles P show you’d be like, “Wow that guy sounds so ominous, he could be threatening my entire family and I would still think it sounded cool.” This weekend August 6th and 7th at the Rock the Block festival at Southpaw you can experience both options, which is pretty intimidating but totally worth your time and energy. Get your tickets here.

Freeload: DJ Webstar f. Young Wonder, Jim Jones & Styles P, “Uptown” MP3

We get music in some of the darndest ways here at The FADER. Of course people email, and sometimes they send bulky FedEx packages with these shiny little discs enclosed. One time there was even this kid who got The FADER office address and waited patiently in the lobby for a certain editor to return from lunch so he could hand deliver a mixtape. Then there are cases like that of “Uptown,” which we heard on the radio last night during a DJ Camilo
mix set, and after some cursory internet research found out we’re like a month late on. For the best ode to upper Manhattan since our FADER #59 Harlem story, DJ Webstar collected some of Harlem’s finest including Jimmy Jones and Young Wonder, who may or may not be a Smack DVD battle legend named T-Rex. We’re not sure how Yonkers became Uptown, but Styles P also joins the gang to expound on some of the more hood fab experiences and cultural signifiers we touched on in our Harlem story.

FADER TV: Styles P f. Jadakiss, “Good Times (I Get High)” (Live at The Levi’s®/FADER Fort)

We’re not gonna try to explain how or why, but when Styles P joined Jadakiss onstage at The Levi’s®/FADER Fort for this lively rendition of SP’s 2002 weed anthem, the venue developed its own peculiar weather pattern blocking out the sun and making us feel kind of dizzy. We got over it though and ate 19 bags of pistachios. Clouds make us so hungry.

Another Rik Cordero low-budget wonder, just in time for today’s release of Ghost’s Big Dough Rehab.

Rik Cordero is a damned visionary. Or at least he listened to our incessant requests for more videos of dudes standing on sidewalks in the cold with all their friends and rapping really well. NO FRILLS. This also happens to be one of our favorites off Beanie’s The Solution which hits stores next week.

Audio: Styles P f. Black Thought, “Cause I’m Black”

Songs like this point toward a more relevant direction for aging rappers than what’s been offered up to this point (sorry Jay). Like dudes need to start being angrier, talking about joint pain, small apartments, cop hassles, and “the kids.” Curmudgeony shit. SP and Thought are around the same age as Syl Johnson, “Cause I’m Black”’s sample source, for what it’s worth.

“We vote for Oprah, Obama and Eric B” what? So do we! We wrote in Duke da God in the last election though so, you know, whoever comes through the office on November 4th is our candidate. Also don’t miss the Big Dough Rehab commercial.

Video: Styles P f. Swizz Beatz, “Blow Your Mind”

We don’t have firsthand knowledge that Styles P and director Todd Angkasuwan smoked sherm while conceptualizing this video but it seems fairly likely. Like dudes, why is Stringer Bell running from a dude on a dirtbike? And why is Sheek Louch dressed like a Girl Scout? Shark Week? What the fuck? Is this the best video ever? Probably not but whatever, we have dreams about talking penguins and shit.
