At The Bar: Suzannah Johannes

For episode eight of At The Bar With Southern Comfort, in which we travel to some of our favorite new bands’ hometowns (or as near as we can get) and film them covering some of their favorite bands’ best songs, we caught up with the lovely Suzannah Johannes in St. Louis, Missouri.   She softly strummed a Pogues song, “If I Should Fall From Grace With God,” while old ladies served burgers and shakes in the bar’s adjacent restaurant.  Suzannah  grew up on a farm not far from St. Louis, but had never actually visited, so we were all just excited to be there.  Stay tuned in the coming weeks as we travel across North America to meet up with other bands while racking up frequent flyer miles and good times.

Freeload: Suzannah Johannes, “Horserider’s Smile”

Suzannah Johannes, who was featured as part of a story on Range Life Records in issue 51, says “soon I’ll have to sell my horses/ and then I’ll have to leave,” which is incredibly sad. “Horserider’s Smile,” is from her debut single, out in September, and it’s got a Francois Hardy via Kansas croon and steady clop.

Video Chat with Range Life Ladies

Go to Daytrotter right now to talk live on video to Dri and Suzannah Johannes, both on Range Life Records, the Lawrence, Kansas label we featured in our current issue. Sounds like a weird late night infomercial, true, but these girls are both worth knowing. And if you miss the talk talk, you can check back in to Daytrotter for the session they’re recording tonight for the site in Rock Island, Illinois, and if you live in/on Rock Island (don’t we all?), catch Dri and Suzannah at, ready?, HUCKLEBERRY’S PIZZA.
