Video: Tabi Bonney, “Rich Kids”

All the support that Wale’s been getting lately has us wondering what Tabi Bonney, the other half of our FADER 44 DC Rap story, has been doing. Apparently he’s been working on a series of EPs to be released this year, and this is the first single from the first EP, Dope. Like much of the other music we’ve heard from dude, it’s refreshingly minimal: there are no extraneous words or overly busy beats. We’d even call it low-key if this song didn’t make us think that Mad Lion was going to come out of hibernation and jump on a remix at any second. (via Nah Right)

We’re just going off some serious mindspace plumbing right now, but what if Tabi Bonney
becomes the most minimal rapper of all rappers ever? In this song he says like 19 words the whole time and there is crazy negative space in between each verse. The weirdest part about all of that is that he actually does it well. Actually the weirdest part is that he went to Togo to shoot a YouTube video. Also, where did his hair go?!? Whatever! We could listen to a whole rap album of ultra minimal raps like this, and before you get all up in arms like, Hey FADER that is a pretty bold statement, keep in mind that a whole album of songs like this would amount to like three average-length rap songs.

With all the Wale-mania going on (congrats on the Interscope deal dude!) it sorta seems like we all forgot that Tabi Bonney is still out there making jams and driving past the White House in a beat up car, lyrics dropping haphazardly over beats, sparse and somehow still catchy.
