Exclusive Audio: XXXchange Mix For Red Bull Academy Radio

Its no secret that this office, or at least a dance-proficient, bespectacled corner of it, runs on energy drinks. And when we say run, we literally mean fuel and refuel like gasoline for a car. Now we’d never go so far as to say energy drinks inspire greatness, but we’re totally into this XXXchange for Red Bull Academy mix we just received, and we have a funny feeling more than a few cans of Red Bull were sacrificed for our booty’s benefit. The set was recorded live at the Sónar Festival in Barcelona and has XXXchange reminding us how we used to love us some Chaka Khan and how we still love a bunch of other stuff. Listen to it below and let it transform your desk into a discotecha.

Exclusive Freeload: Ceci Bastida x XXXChange, “Controlar”

Just this weekend we were listening to XXXChange’s awesome remix of “L.E.S. Artistes” and thinking that if he made a new wavey electro-pop album, we would almost certainly make it rain on said album. Our wishes are a little closer to being realized with this bodacious, clicky, gongy track “Controlar,” sung en Español by the excellent Tijuana/LA-based vocalist Ceci Bastida, who Mexican punk completists will remember from border revolutionaries Tijuana NO!, and whose voice is refreshingly husky like a summer rainstorm. Our Spanish is reprehensible, but we are still singing the memorable hook around the office, loudly.

NYC: FADER 57 Issue Release Party

Since last spring we’ve been spending a lot of time at Heathers. So much time, in fact, that we were already there when our FADER 57 issue release party showed up on Wednesday. F57 Gen-Fer XXXChange DJ’d while everyone drank complimentary Bass Ale. At some point we looked around and noticed that we were surrounded by friends and family (actual blood relatives not included), and by 10pm XXXChange’s set was over, everyone was admiring the photo essays in the issue and FADER contributing editor T. Cole Rachel was rounding out the night with Fleetwood Mac on the speakers. We can’t complain.

Live: XXXchange At The Original Penguin Store

One of the questions we ask ourselves on a daily basis is: What is it like to listen to awesome music while you drink and look at clothes? Now that we can answer that question, we will tell you that it is excellent to do all those things together. While we mingled with a weirdly large number of people in v-neck sweaters at the Original Penguin store we drank Southern Comfort, Hoegaarden, Stella and Becks (so many choices!) and listened to XXXchange play Prince’s “Erotic City” in addition to a lot of music we wouldn’t complain about hearing in any situation, let alone one with free booze and clothes offered at a discount.

Freeload: XXXchange’s We Make It Good Mix

We’re all about change, and if that means that the next in the so far so awesome We Make It Good series is an all soundtrack mix from Alex XXXchange, then we’re cool with it. Hightlights: soundtrack mainstays/possible musical heroes of Studio,Tangerine Dream’s “Love on a Real Train” blending seamlessly into the London Symphony Orchestra’s reprise of The Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter.” Who knew that even existed? And after listening to Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” followed by Vangelis’ “Blush Response,” we’re going to have to make some calls and get Peter Gabriel in the studio with Vangelis to record the album we never knew we wanted.

Freeload: Daedelus f. Michael Johnson, “Make It So (XXXchange Remix)”

We put Daedelus and his excellent muttonchops in FADER 43 as part of our Electrocuted Los Angeles feature, and he has a new record coming out called Love To Make Music To which is running shit up in our iTunes today. He also produced that TI$A Obama song that is suddenly everywhere and fortunately we just got this XXXchange remix in the mail to pass along to you. The original with Michael Johnson of Holopaw fame is a jammer in and of itself, but XXXchange takes it from space-disco to handclap house with some subtle tweaks. Dude is on a streak with the weird remixes of late with this, the “Comfy In Nautica” jawn and Santi’s “LES Artistes”. He also did an exclusive remix of this cup of coffee we’re drinking and it OFF THE CHAIN SON.
