Freeload: Vybz Kartel, “I Miss U”

June 12, 2008

Vybz Kartel has a long and un-storied history with The FADER, being the only major dude in JA who hasn't landed in the pages of our magazine so far (Ed. except one misspelled blurb in the Nwsprnt section of F16 and another little mention in F23. Sorry dude!). However, we have a website (www.thefader.com) and Vybz is on it fairly often. Do a search, it's true! But in all those posts, we have never been able to say that Vybz is the Phil Collins of Jamaica. Now we can. Vybz is the Phil Collins of Jamaica. On this song, someone—hopefully Vybz—sings an off-key version of the chorus from "Against The Odds". It's so bad it's (almost) good, but it's also not the reason we're into "I Miss U". That reason would be that it's Vybz' entry into the new genre we invented called "minimal dancehall", not to mention that it's totally creepy for a love song.
