Video: An Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump Go To America

August 04, 2009

There is an article in the new Nylon (Sienna Miller, holler) about "psych-goth," a genre they say encompasses the moody gloom of bands like Salem and Pocahaunted. They also included the wild-named An Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump, who will forever answer the question of what that means. In early July, the trio of British women—whom we don't find to be particularly bleak, just raw—took a trip to Chicago to record with Steve Albini at his Electric Audio studio. Because they are exactly like Rayanne from My So Called Life, they keep a diary-like blog documenting their feelings about beating drums dry and why they have songs with worrisome titles like "I Bask In Dreams of Suicide." But these two videos (the second of which is after the jump), a sweet tourist's view of the Windy City, are fully wholesome and excited. So on one end of the psych-goth spectrum, Salem hires a prostitute to strip on a car for their video and on the other, An Experiment buys an Obama sweatshirt at the pharmacy. Hi, we love you. Also, their music shreds. Check this live set from France a while back and imagine in their minds that they are freaking out about Oprah.
