Booka Shade, “Regenerate” MP3

February 18, 2010

A couple of years ago Booka Shade played in New York City and it was not what we expected. We expected smoke machines and the kind of happiness you get from intense sadness, like the pleasure in watching Todd Solondz movies, or teasing Robert Smith's hair. But it was way Euro-sparkle, one of the German duo wearing a bejeweled T-shirt and a headphone mic, pacing up and down the stage like a techno Richard Simmons. It was weird. But you can't fault the dude who wrote "White Rooms" and "Night Falls." GET OUT OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC JAIL FREE. And now they have their third record coming, it's called More! and it's due May 4th. "Regenerate" is the first taste of the record and it's a little Kylie meets Kraftwerk, or like they have been feeling Luomo (where my dogs who don't believe in guilty pleasures? Holler!) though certainly forward, it's much more minimal than many of their previous efforts, centered around a sharp repeating digi-bloop. It doesn't wholly kick in until about a minute before the end, when it gets heavy for about 30 seconds. Maybe not the best part, but our favorite. Reconcile that, dudes.
