Daihei Shibata’s Cilia from Outer Space

March 12, 2010

In director Daihei Sibata's birth odyssey, graceful cilia tendrils fan out from cells, burst into light, grow into anemone-like plants and eventually develop into a real human person. It's a celebration of life (um, it's titled "The Light of Life") but beyond the literal, it looks as airy and beautiful as deep-sea creatures and seems to allude to as-yet-unimagined life from outer space, like he's imagining the thread of everyone being connected. YO WE ARE ALL ONE, MAN! Set to Debussy, its unpretentious beauty of it is a real Friday moodbooster. Happy weekend!
