As a rule, Bonnaroo—and summer festivals in general—presents an overwhelming surplus of beer and carnival food, which is to say a dearth of nutritionally-sound fruits and vegetables. On the morning of our last day in Manchester, Tennessee, before our daily lot of Budweiser, we stopped by a small fruit stand along the highway and picked up a basket of perfect peaches. And when we interviewed Phoenix's Christian Mazzalai and Laurent Brancowitz and discovered their lack of enthusiasm for American food, we considered it our duty to offer them some of our fruit, which they accepted with classic French reserve. Aside from the food situation, Phoenix seemed to be having a great time down in Tennessee, with only one request: that we conduct the interview in the shade.
