Shine 2009 is an amazing band name, conjuring up a special nostalgia for the painfully recent past, a year not long out of fashion but far enough back to feel embarrassed about bad decisions. At first we thought “featuring Paula Abdul” was a clever way of shouting out a sample in the song, but “So Free” shines with original Paula Abdul guest vocals, probably the highest honor for the group: acceptance and collaboration from an iconic artist whose sound they’re working to keep alive.
