When rappers talk sports stars, they're usually making grandiose claims about prowess or, especially if you're Young Jeezy, using jersey numbers as a metaphor for your re-up discount. But on "Allen Iverson," Memphis’ Don Trip uses Iverson, who has been famously harangued by the media, as a touchstone for similar downsides to being a recognized rapper. The Cool & Dre-produced track even takes audio clips from the notorious Practice Press Conference where Iverson defended himself after skipping a 76ers work out. Trip already picked a strong sports reference to illustrate his point, but as a Tennessee native, choosing the icon who said, "God chose Memphis" after inking a one-year deal with the Grizzlies in 2009, it's even more on point.
